By believing in theism, most people generally agree that there is one God and he created this universe, the earth, and the people on that. Following that belief one would say that if that is true, then you would believe he created your life to be executed out in the precise way it has in your past leading you to have no real free will in what you choose to do with your life.

Not to mention, if the almighty, great god hand crafted each and everyone of us... how could a good and gracious god create pedophiles, murders and so on?

-- Posted by Parsine at 9:29 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

Paedophiles are cool, fuck off.

-- Posted by Mein Alias at 9:29 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

That only applies to people who believe in Predestination. Nice try.

-- Posted by J U S T at 9:30 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

Only if you mean monotheism. Polytheism would be a slightly different story.

-- Posted by LucidAssassin at 9:30 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

yes i would agree we dont because its already planned out and its just a matter of time until the "decisions" are made

because satan has taken a hold of them and convinced them to do bad things

-- Posted by gwen gardner at 9:30 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

thats a tough one.i don't think i'm even awake enough to get into that!

-- Posted by Parsine at 9:31 pm on Jan. 8, 2009

By the way, "free will" requires a belief in the supernatural, since purely natural mechanics cannot allow it.

Which makes no difference... each religion differs from another, but if you believe in God creating the world, universe, and everything else in it... how can you say you have free will?

i was thinking that at first too. but shes also mainly talking about christianity. hindus, for example, dont have predestination so their choices do matter

No.

The very definition of God, including omniscience, implies that s/he will know your entire life. Thus, nothing you do will really be your own decision, since someone already knew what you were going to do.

duh duh duh retard, just cuz they say there 9is one GOD doesn't mean there isn't satan to whoever....and satan is who causes all those wankers. I mean, plus, it really isn't as basic as you think it is..read Orsen Scott Card and get some fresh ideas yo.

monotheism doesnt instantly mean christianity or that you believe in God. you could always believe in another god there just has to be one

I wasn't attacking the belief in god haha you are misunderstanding, I am very obviously talking about ONE religion in general.

That's a childish definition of omniscience. If the Christian God knew the future, he never would have made Saul king.

But that is the point really... pointing out the flaws with religion... things that don't really add up.

A religious person would say "God knew... it was part of his plan."

but he knew that he had to make Saul king. we couldnt possibly understand why things happen the way they do, but everything that happens has a purpose in the end

It can't possibly be part of a plan, and yet still be considered free will. That is my only point.

free will doesnt cause evil, it causes chaos. evil is a whole different story entirely. yes, people would tend to turn to evil if given free will, but people arent made good by taking free will away
