how long did it take for you to actually become addicted?

i left for my first semester of college back in august. at first, i only smoked every once in awhile. no way was i addicted. i had smoked maybe one every couple months or so haha. i did it, but not often.

then when i went to college and went to more parties, i started doing it wayyyyy more. it became a daily thing. then after becoming a daily thing, it came to the point where i smoked like half a pack a day.

then to the point where it was like "okay....i NEED a cigarette right now or i'll explode" when i was sitting in class.

by the end of the semester, i was smoking about a pack a day.

i was pretty sure i was addicted. i smoked a lot, both around others and by myself. it felt good. i always smoked when i was stressed.

but then i came home for christmas break. i smoked like 5 on the first night. then, the next day i didn't get an oppurtunity to sneak out from my parents house and smoke one. but the thing is, i didn't "feel the need". and from then on...3 weeks later, i STILL haven't had one. not a single cigarette.

i'm kind of amazed. i've been smoking up a storm for about 4-5 months now. about 2 months ago, i was pretty sure i was actually addicted. i was up to a pack a day, always craving a cigarette. but now that i'm home, i feel no desire to have one. i've gone 3 weeks without one.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, i'm just kinda of surprised lol.

Three months. I started because I was under a load of stress from the Military.

So how long were you smoking a pack a day? You said it was near the end of the semester, so I'm assuming a couple of weeks?

It would probably take a couple of months to become really physically and mentally addicted to it.

You probably had a moderate mental addiction that was triggered by your environment, but by changing environments (going home) you essentially were able to get over it. It is likely that when you go back to school you will start having cravings again though.

And I'm sure you did have some moderate physical withdrawal the first week even though you didn't mention it in your post.

i have been smoking since i was 12 and am not addicted.

I actually find it fun to smoke less often...and different things... you get that "headkill" better... lol. But i cant seem to get addicted..its weird. Then again, maybe i am and just dont know it, i been around second hand smoke from birth =/ But i didnt think that could get you addicted...  hmm

-- Posted by sykexl at 10:25 am on Jan. 12, 2009

Honestly? Never. The most I ever smoked was about a half a pack per day for close to two years and I figured that would be enough to have me some-what addicted but nope, it wasn't a problem.

yeah i think there's a difference between a habit and an addiction.

junkies have an addiction in that they literally cannot function and are physically sick without heroin.
you don't.

i got addicted after the third cigarette. i've been smoking for 8 months now and im really addicted now.

After about a year of light smoking, I feel that Im still only mentally addicted. I only like to smoke on work breaks or in social situations

-- Posted by Acustico23 at 12:56 pm on Jan. 12, 2009

I've been smoking on a daily basis for almost a year now. For about 4-5 months I was at about a pack a day. I can not smoke one for a day or two and be fine with it, but its such a habit at this point I always find myself buying a new pack. The longest I've gone without smoking is about 3 days in the course of the last year. However, I still don't think I'm physically addicted to it.

Idk. It's not hard to quit smoking if it's difficult for you to fuel the habit. It becomes difficult when all you have to do is walk into the gas station and grap a pack with your slurpee. If i'm at home I just deal with the nic fits and wait until my parents leave. Then the cigarette is GLORIOUS, but it's not like I was writhing on the floor all day craving.

I normally smoke betwen 1 and 8 a day, have done for just over a year. I'm still not addicted. I spent 2 weeks without smoking just to prove I could and didn't get a single craving.

-- Posted by snowfish at 6:05 pm on Jan. 12, 2009

I started smoking when I was 14.
I quit without much trouble when I was 15 1/2
started again at 16 and a half
I wouldn;t say iu was really addicted until 18 or so.
even still, I've quit for months at a time without super cravings. I'm a pretty light smoker at the moment, although I go through pack a day periods, I'm at like 5 a day right now.

-- Posted by Berend at 3:27 pm on Jan. 13, 2009

Smoking is also habitual. If you are removed from associations of smoking you'll find it easier to kick it.

-- Posted by BackPorch at 4:01 pm on Jan. 13, 2009

I still like to say that I'm not.

-- Posted by live it up at 5:56 pm on Jan. 13, 2009

i smoked from age 15-17 everyday without being addicted. im 19 now smoke a pack a day and i get pissed frustrated and unable to concentrate on things like school work. if i feel the slightest urge to smoke a cig which is pretty often when i smoke 15-20 in an 18 hour day

-- Posted by Dustin at 6:32 pm on Jan. 13, 2009

I believe that I was actually addicted to smoking after around a month of smoking everyday.  Now I wish that I hadn't even started smoking because quitting is ALOT harder than starting.

Nicotine is the content which is responsible for the addiction of smoking as it is habit forming. Smoking of any kind is not good for health. Chantix is one of those medicines which help in getting over smoking habit, but this medicine has some side effects as well. Person using chantix mainly encounter sleeplessness, change of taste and headache. So people should consult there physician before going for this medicine.
