Is anyone doing any volunteer work while in college?

I currently volunteer with two places.  I am a volunteer firefighter with my local fire department.  I am also a Div Chief with the Portlight Strategies DART team.  We respond to disasters, whether the be natural or man made.

I did for quite some time.  I have been with the fire department for going on 5 years, and I have dated two of the guys there, not including my husband.  When the guys found out I want getting married most of them backed off.  Some still do, but they are all like family to me now.

Some people just can't get the rod far enough up their arse can they?

It must be the new Messiah or something.. really.

Enjoy Ramadan Glory?

Yeah, I'm volunteering with St John's Ambulance as a 1st aider, and with the British Red Cross's home from hospital scheme.

I volunteer with a Literacy Council to teach adult learners to read and write. It's my career goal, so the program is beneficial to me as well as the people I'm tutoring.

Explain to me how doing volunteer work puts a rod up anyone's ass?  So doing something for others is now in some way bad?

That's a lot of fun.  I've done a lot of rides on the ambulances and will be working on one soon.

That's awesome.  Not a lot of people take a lot of interest in that.  Glad some people do.

Thanks. I find that adult learners will be easier to work with since they are coming to me instead of being forced to be in school like teens or children.

Very true.  They are there because they actually want to be.

It makes it more rewarding. I like it when people are putting effort into bettering themselves educationally.

Not at all. I work with my local library, helping them out with cataloguing and things of that nature.

I just don't don't feel the need to rub in others' faces what a lovely person I am.

Because that's exactly what she was doing by asking a question. God, you are beyond irritating.

-- Posted by Chiefette at 11:18 am on Jan. 26, 2009

Where was I rubbing anything in anyone's face?  I was asking them what they do for volunteer work and told them what I do, as the reason for my question.

You are no better than anyone else, get over it.

You don't have a point.
You are just trying to hold a personal vendetta against me from another thread and it is quite immature.
No one here, other than you, has even implied that they believe that they are better than anyone else.  If you didn't think you were better than me and everyone else, you wouldn't have made the comments you did.

What comments are these?

I suppose I do have an ever-so-slight vendetta against you, but only for the way you wish to take my rights from me.

I am indeed arrogant. However, this does not get in the way of my interactions with other people.

I lack the desire to be nice to you. Simple really. There are lots of other people that I get on exceptionally well with on here, I just find you stiff and contemptuous.

-- Posted by Chiefette at 11:54 am on Jan. 26, 2009

HAHA, what rights have I taken from you?  Considering we live in different countries, if you are not lying about where you are from, not even my country has taken a single right from you.  That is just plain ignorant.

I am going to very much disagree with that, because obviously, it does.

I don't give a shit if you are nice to me or desire to be, it's just making you look stupid.  I find you to be ignorant and arrogant for absolutely no reason.  Take that ignorance and your little personal issue elsewhere.

So you admit you were wrong, didn't think you would do as much.

I'd like to volunteer, but the barriers here are so great! For any of the volunteer positions I applied for, you must have CPR certification, ALL your shots up to date (inc. rabies and tetanus), 5 references, a car, and be able to volunteer for 6 months. It's hard, but I'm still looking.

The Honors Program at my school requires 120 hours by graduation, so yes.

I'm a Conversation Partner, which means I got matched up with a foreign student so she can practice her English.
