Well, when my roommate left after first semester and cleaned all of her stuff out of the room, she left one of those big round wicker chairs in the closet. I tried messaging her about it, but got nothing back, so I gave it away to one of the girls on my floor. I just got a facebook message today saying she was headed back up here to schedule classes for next semester, and was wondering if she could have her chair back. ....Fuck. I tried asking the other girl for it back, but she's already got it packed up and in a truck headed to her place. Damn, oh well, guess I'll just tell her I threw it out. Whatever, she shouldn't have just left it stuffed in the closet, or at least she should have come back sooner in the semester looking for it, instead of waiting until the very end when I'm close to move-out.

It's her own fault for leaving it... she should've contacted you sooner.

I would say that you don't have to lie about it. If she didn't tell you before she left that she would be back and didn't respond to her messages you shouldn't feel bad that you got rid of it. Don't permit her to make a big deal out of it because a wicker chair is no big deal. Just say sorry, I tried to get in touch with you about it but you didn't respond and I got rid of it...end of story. If she gets pissy just stare at her and don't say a thing. When she sees that she's not getting to you she will get over it.
