What are you going to need it for? Games? Graphics? Animation? Movies? Note taking/ surfing the internet? Music?
-- Posted by lonelychickk at 8:55 am on June 26, 2005
well, first of all, for college in general. so i guess internet to research, programs to write up essays, enjoy ilfe--music, instant messanger, etc... i dont know, nothing specific really. budget.... my parents havent specified. im choosing between dell and apple because those are the only 2 types that my college system offers... like if i buy a computer through this system, ill automaticaly be connected to my college network system and ill have 4 year warranty with all these other services by my college... that's why im choosing between a dell and an apple..

Then Dell would probably be good, but if you are going into the arts an apple would be better.

Dells are good affordable computers. Just dont get the cheapest one they have, theyre crap. Get somethign around $600+. Apples are very good, but quite expensive, so if you are on a budget, I dont reccomend you get one.
-- Posted by star12300 at 9:37 am on June 26, 2005
I've heard that Dell aren't very good with customer services and stuff. I have never owned one so I can't be sure about that. Are you looking for a laptop?
-- Posted by lonelychickk at 9:47 am on June 26, 2005
ohh, yes, im looking for a laptop. does anyone know specific advantages/disadvantages about dell and apple??
-- Posted by star12300 at 9:59 am on June 26, 2005
Seriously. I'm not just saying this. And I don't want to put you off or anything (actually I do) but laptops are shit! I've had nothing but trouble since 5 minutes after I got mine. And lots of other people I know have said the same. I'd really advise you not to. If you do though make sure it's quite expensive because the cheaper they are, the crapper.

Go with the Apple. You'll get much better support with it, while Dells support is talking to some foreigner who complains your phone sucks. The hardware in the dells pretty much blow, and not to mention your stuck with windows, if that's what you want so be it, but OSX is a nice OS as well, and prettier then XP in my opinion. Anyway. That is SUCH bullshit. You know what you should get.... Get a PowerBook, it's FANTASTIC.. and OS X is an unbeaten slice of sex.
-- Posted by Charolastra at 3:56 pm on June 26, 2005
A cousin told me that his Powerbook got so hot that it melted his CD-ROM drive. He's also been out of college for a while so maybe that problem's been fixed... but he said it annoyed him and he got tired of it quite a lot (the Powerbook itself, that is.) If you're familiar with PC's and never/rarely used a Mac, go with the Dell. You'd probably get sick of the Mac trying to figure it out while writing a term paper/notes/whatever. The Dell would be also half the cost of the Powerbook... at least one equipped with the bare essentials. But, if your budget's over a grand, and you have experience with OSX, then go for the Powerbook. I'd go for it, but that's just me. I'm at least somewhat familiar with Macs.

OS X is incredibly easy to use.
-- Posted by Charolastra at 3:59 pm on June 26, 2005
Yeah I know it is, but it may depend on the person, too...

What, as in "Retarded or not retarded"!? Also, Price isn't an issue... sure, they're a bit expensive in comarison to some (poorly made) Dell piles of shit etc., but they don't break, they're not gonna need new parts, you're not gonna need anti-virus etc. etc. In the long run, A MAC is a MUCH better idea.

Eh I'm also not a Mac nor a PC expert, so I guess I shouldn't have said anything in the firstplace. But I mean if it's just for college, then whatever, although it'd probably crash a lot which would be more annoying than "figuring out" how to use the Mac in the first place...

Apple's got excellent graphics, and its software is more reliable and consistent. It's also got great customer service. But because it's mac and not the mainstream windows, a lot of windows software that you are used to may not be supported by mac. Here's my experience with mac software angst: Can't unzip .exe files (if someone knows a program to overcome that, tell me? ) MSN messenger on mac sucks sucks sucks. I cannot emphasise this enough. Most games are a few versions behind, if they exist in mac software at all. Files are fine when transferred from windows to mac, but crap from mac to windows.

Unzip a *.exe?!... That's not zipped though. If you mean RUN a *.exe, of course not... it's a program for Windows, similarly a Windows PC couldn't run a *.dmg etc. (I think it can't anyway.) The MSN thing could be better, Apple wants it to be.. but what can they do? It's Microshit's fault. Oh.. and as for the games thing. That's KINDA true, sure, but they're getting to the same level now as they realise for games more people are getting MACS. HALO for example. (A game originally being designed FOR MAC)

i think my two choices are between: ********APPLE******** Apple Powerbook G4 15" bundle $2815.00 ********************* ********DELL********* Dell Latitude D810 15" $2446.00 ********************* Im leaning towards the Apple now... hearing so much that Dell sucks, lol. Any specifics about these versions of Apple/Dell? Oh, and I wouldn't have to worry about comparing service or warranty because either way, since it's a Student Computer Offering from my university, it'll be the same.
