I'm applying to some pretty selective schools, but I've never heard of this? Typically you send the amount that they require plus one supplemental recommendation from an another adult who knows you well, like a teacher from a summer course, an employer you know well, a coach, etc. EDIT: You could also bring this question to collegeconfidential.com on the specific forum for whichever schools you're talking about. You'd get a straight answer pretty easily there.
