Hm, Mayans have credibility as they've predicted many things that happened exactly. NASA warns of a solar max in 2012, and that type of solar activity can greatly interfere with our magnetic system and ruin satellites and power grids.
Those are the only two reasons that keep me pumped for 2012. There are several reasons why people believe this shit.

Because it gives us something to live for. We understand that we'll die one day, but we have no idea when. Trying to calculate the exact time is just the product of human curiosity. It makes us feel as though we know when the culmination of our time will be, and thus to some extent, we feel more in control of our "destiny." This seems to be an increasing trend. Wasn't it just June 6th of 2006 that the world was supposed to end? Now 6 years later, the Mayans are predicting our impending doom? What ever happened to the "Rapture", or nuclear winter, or things of those natures? It's all in the context of time. Like we're just ready to die, and the closer the implications of the explanation, the better.
On the note of 2012, however, I've read that more than anything, it is the resetting of the Mayan calendar. So the Mayans will probably be measuring time in a new standard apart from "B.C." and "A.D." (which I'd be surprised to find they used to begin with). The only impending doom I sense coming from that is from the backlash of Christians who would object to such a "baseless" new standard.
And even if it's not the resetting, come on. What could ancient Mayans explain that modern science and technology could not? The Mayans thought sacrificing live humans (especially children for their purity) by cutting out their hearts in offering to the gods was a good idea. SERIOUSLY?

its all bullshit
we've managed to make it this far without any certainties whatsoever, so why wouldnt we plunge through 2012?

Yeah, they predicted astronomical trends with excellent precision. Unfortunately, in their calendar 2012 isn't just an equinox or an amusing comet. It's a grand spiritual change resulting in a different world. The Native Americans had some great agricultural insights: nutritional balancing in the form of the three sisters style of farming. That doesn't mean I believe that the earth bears fruit because Great Bear Spirit shits in the woods.

I've actually watched that entire episode on the history channel. It was pretty interesting in a whole, but it does show a tad bit of faults which are most likely going to happen. On the other hand, it somewhat presents new information which people tend to overlook and not discuss. Everyone focuses in on the "blahblah mayan calendar ending" when in reality, there is a lot more possible "evidence" which goes along with it. I don't necessarily think that whatever the prophecies tell us is going to happen, but I don't think that we should ever completely rule out the possibility of these things happening.
