What's the deal with downloading images rather than just hotlinking them? Some legal thing?

Well it sorta steals bandwidth from the site you're hotlinking from. Then they take measures like if you do it, a really fucked up image gets posted instead.

It was put in origionally as a lot of topics get ruined when images get deleted off other servers; also so that moderators can review each image.

It's an accepted practice though and not that many sites use anti-hotlinking. I have a hard time believing it was done just because it's nice. That's a hell of a lot of extra bandwidth LW is going to need to pay for. Wonder if there was some kind of a letter or something, bwahaha. Then again web hosting is cheap as chips these days. The added bandwidth may only cost a few bucks.
