Basically its telling young kids that its okay to have sex. yes, the girl is pregnant. yes, she is dealing with a lot of shit because of it. yet at the same time, you have these other HIGH-school students running around having sex with each other, talking about how great it is and how much they enjoy it, thus, implying that you should enjoy it too. every other scene, they are talking about sex. almost to the point where its unrealistic. :x like its just sleeping. i dunno. it kind of sickens me. at least considering a lot of young people watch this show, such as my 13 year old sister.

do you not see the message where they talk about protective sex and how to prevent pregnancy at the end of each show?
-- Posted by Rawrj at 5:46 pm on July 6, 2009
That show is absolutely awful.
-- Posted by amber10lynne at 5:46 pm on July 6, 2009
They made a bit with the cast saying its no okay to have sex and if you want to you should talk to your parents or an adult you trust. which i thought was funny.

Oh gosh, grow up. Sex is EVERYWHERE

Anybody who watches this should be mature enough to know what's wrong and right.

Yeah, but unfortunately almost everything sends a negative message to kids.. they just have to be taught properly about them. I mean not to listen to them, you know?

YES because a TV show really affects someones opinion about sex

Idk about you, but my high school sex life was pretty good. Nothing wrong with sex, imo. Don't see the big deal. All the age shit we have now only came about as an overreaction to the pedo popularity in victorian england.

YES, but at the same time they are implying that having sex is completely okay and normal when you're in highschool.

Maybe not immediately. But eventually, it's possible.

Most people that watch the show know that it's incredibly unrealistic.

it may teach them things that could influence their decisions. i never said it affects their life. i'm just saying it doesn't send a good message to younger viewers.

I guess you're not aware that the media has the biggest influence on teenagers and young adults then.. right?

Well, I'm pretty sure that The Secret Life of the American Teenager isn't to blame, given that teenage pregnancy has been dramatically decreasing for decades. It could have something to do with the fact that teenagers are naturally sexual, though. The media didn't invent sexual desire.

maybe to some people. but when you are young, its harder for you to make rational decisions. such as, the decision if you are REALLY emotionally ready or not. cause when you are in highschool, your emotions are everywhere. its easy to make big decisions you may regret.

well of course not that show alone. but it doesn't help at all, either. the LAST thing we need is a show urging young teenagers to have sex. or at least, telling them that its okay and people do it all the time. and actually, the slow of teenage pregnancy also has a LOT to do with birth control that people didn't have a long time ago. the media sure as hell has a big influence. peer pressure, much?

Myth. "However, empirical tests show that adolescents are no less rational than adults. Applications of rational models to adolescent decision-making show that adolescents are consistent in their reasoning and behavior after the salient set of beliefs is assessed (Adler et al 1990). Quadrel et al (1993) demonstrated that adolescents are no more biased in their estimates of vulnerability to adverse health outcomes than are their parents." Adler, N.E., & Matthews, K. (1994). We've had birth control for a very long time. Teen pregnancy is slowing because our society is finally opening up about sex and explaining how it can be done safely. It's absurd to believe that teens are only having sex because the television told them to.

um, im just talking from what my doctors have told me. perhaps the decisions you make seem rational at the TIME (when you're a teenager) but your brain grows and changes as your get older. what you believe as a young person could be COMPLETELY different then what you believe 5 years later. what may seem like a good idea to have sex now, later you may feel regret. your emotions are everywhere when you are a teenager, so yes, they CAN block you from making rational decisions.
