I hate when people from Europe say, "we speak proper English and you don't." Are they not aware that American English is different than their English? Although America doesn't have an official language, two thirds of Americans speak American English.

Which is why we say things differently. Such as mum and mom, color and colour, and etc.

Some of you should do your research on Webster.

I speak English, perfectly.

Apparently Americans can't write American English.

They're just mad we made their language more efficient by eliminating all the unnecessary U's.

I use Mum, Colour, Favour, etc....

I'm used to it because I talk to so many Non-Americans.

You're using the apostrophe wrong, by the way.

Americans, not American's.

It wasn't really an admission that I think American English is better, it's all based on accents mainly. However, as most countries teach American English including (I believe) European countries, it's wrong to say Europeans look down upon it.

I speak proper english, I was raised as a proper lady.

Ah its mutation of english - not a bad thing, but you cant really compare anymore. I detest it when Americans say i am speaking english wrong however....

I have heard Americans say 'can't' like 'carn't'.

It's only drawlly, squeaky Americans that pronounce it 'can-t'.

Not all British people add "r's" to their words, as you put it. My guess is you're thinking of a typical English accent, but that's just one type.

-- Posted by Whittal at 11:16 am on July 17, 2009

Exactly, the English language is as varied as any other.  There are so many different dialects and it's hard for even English people like myself to understand them all of the time.

Take a look at this map and listen to the different accents.

I'd say that British English is taught most in the world since that's the original language, but American English is more widespread so we still speak the American way...
