---- Revised Points for Greeting New Members Plan (http://www.golivewire.com/forums/peer-eabnbo-support-a.html)

-- Posted by davjs at 3:18 am on Nov. 4, 2005

Hi everyone, you know that I'm always looking for better ways to make new members feel welcome.

I have changed Messenger to give out 1 reward point per message sent to new members who have joined in the last week.

There is a limit of 3 reward points per new member. 1 point for messaging them, and 2 points for replying to messages from them.

As long as you've been active for at least three days on LiveWire you can earn reward points in this way.

I will be saddened if people try to abuse this little feature by spamming new members. If I hear of anyone abusing it I will take away ten times the number of points they earned by messaging new members and disable their ability to message new members.

You can learn more about ways to earn reward points here:

Frankly I'd hate it and would be hard pressed not to make nasty sarcastic replies to anyone doing it to me.

its a good way to make new members feel welcome, although its not very welcoming to read the announcements and see that people only welcomed you to boost their ranking...

That's nice, but for the people who spam new members, you should remove the whole messenger system for about a week. I'm sure it would be a greater loss to not be able to message anyone, rather than only new members.

Question.
What constitutes abuse?

Yeah, no kidding.  I think it's a good idea, and I've messaged one or two, but I'm afraid to welcome anymore, since I'm not sure what's considered spam and whatnot.

If you're being genuinely kind and welcoming to them then you have nothing to worry about.  If you send so many messages that they feel uncomfortable or it's clear you're doing it just for points, that would be abuse.

Edit: Oh, and if you just send "HI LOLZ" or "ABCDEFGH" or some other generic non-helpful message. . .well don't.

-- Posted by bigred23 at 5:57 pm on Nov. 5, 2005

cool idea...*goes to set up welcome message and neglect doing hw*

-- Posted by Rhapsody at 6:03 pm on Nov. 5, 2005

I like the idea. And how it promotes the older members to get to know the younger members.

-- Posted by Engel at 7:49 pm on Nov. 5, 2005

I can see people abusing this in the near future.

-- Posted by Artistic Drain at 9:21 pm on Nov. 5, 2005

I was wondering what sort of things you suggest we say?

I have a little message I give them. About welcoming them, and how they can PM me with any questions and such...but really, I usually say the same thing in the Welcome forum. SOOOoooo is that all you expect?

-- Posted by Amphigory at 12:25 am on Nov. 6, 2005

I am no longer in favor for this new option.  Since support leaders are becoming "big bros/sis" to the new people, what impact are we doign when we PM them on our own terms?

Are you asking us to say a simple hello or what?  Cause from how I see it, they got someone they can talk to about LW and an already laid out PM with everything in it.

I don't use it becuase I don't know what to say.  Unless you just want us to chit chat with them, then I say f-that, but if you want us to make them feel welcomed, well I think the novice support system already has that cover, so I no longer see the point in having this.

Effective punishment for abusers, I must say. Looks great, I like it because I used to send them messages (the new members) and still do, but I enjoy the points ^_^ Danke.

-- Posted by SweetBlonde at 3:22 am on Nov. 7, 2005

How come I didn't get any point after PMing a new member who was online?

I pictured it more as a support thing.  Members may be looking for help, and to reward you for giving that help to them, you get a nifty reward point.

For one, they never reply back and two, I already PMed two new people and I never got my points, not like I need them in the first place.

They have to actually be new members. Send me their membernames and I will look into it to see if it is a bug or if they had too many days active already.
