As someone who has been getting into Photoshop for sometime now, I’m always looking for cheaper ways to do things. There is a project that I have been watching for some while now, and I think the time has come when it is ready to get a mention.

It's called Gimpshop and it's just a port of TheGimp into an interface where it works in similar ways to Photoshop. Now it isn’t perfect and its still in very early beta testing, but for all those who want to rid themselves of that copy of Photoshop they should not have, this is a good opportunity.

I have now been playing with this for several hours and have found once you get past a few of its quirks, it’s very good. Now yes, it hasn't the power of Photoshop, but it is far more than most people would ever need. I found The Gimp very difficult to get to grips with, whereas this is very simple.

You can get versions for Mac, Linux and Windows, so there is no excuse for not giving it a go.

Windows: Clicky (8meg)
Linux: Clicky (10meg)
Mac: Clicky (40meg) - Note, you will also need Apples X11 from here

I must be the only person that actually bought Photoshop.

Or, my dad, rather.

Haha, a windows version of Gimp?

Well, I have an illegal version of Photoshop CS.... but I'm surprised that Gimp is only 8mb's for Windows... I'll try it. Thank you for the link.

There has been a windows version of TheGimp since the beginning of time. But glad to here you are trying it, that’s the idea.

I have had to The Gimp before but I uninstalled it because I had no idea what I was doing. Any who may be I will reinstall The Gimp and see how things go this time.

We get to take our school laptops(which are macs) home from school. yeah our school is spoiled. They come with elements preloaded, but i've been using the gimp at home. I didn't like how it was 3 seperate windowns. nice find.

Im really not sure what is so hard to use about the GIMP.

I suppose it was made for linux, though, and seems to work better on it.

-- Posted by telomere13 at 4:26 am on Jan. 18, 2006

GIMPshop is a good idea in theory, but the implimentation is quite awful.  Just use The GIMP with the original interface; it's really no more difficult to learn and it's a lot more stable.

-- Posted by Shuichi at 9:05 am on Jan. 18, 2006

Hmm. Seems to me my tablet wont work with it. At all. Hmm I will try a bit more and see if I can get it to work.

You have to remember that we are talking about very early beta here, so don’t expect it to be release ready yet. I have shown it now because I think it is good enough for most people now.

Also, remember, I am suggesting this application for people who have been using for Photoshop illegally, but want to go clean. They will not want the frustration of having the learn to use TheGimp (which I have always disliked the interface for).

Shuichi, I’m not sure why that is a problem, as it still used TheGimps backend which I find good for hardware support. Does your tablet work with TheGimp? If it does then I think it must be a new bug.

I've just found it to be a lot less stable than The GIMP in its original form, and GIMPshop really doesn't do that good of a job of emulating Photoshop's interface anyway.  It arranges a few things and has a background window, but in terms of the actual features unique to Photoshop's interface, it really doesn't have anything new.  I just don't think it's worth the additional crashes and lost work to have an interface that's a tiny bit closer to photoshop.

Actually, as far as I know, no versions of The GIMP have support for pressure-sensitive tablets.  It'll work like a normal mouse, but the pressure-sensitivity is entirely lost, which makes the tablet a great deal less useful.  This is one of the (very, very few) cases where Photoshop really is the better choice.

Its worth a try, I already have legal photoshop but I still use gimp and it may be refreshing to see it with a better interface.

Is this a substitute for photoshop or something like normal image editor? When I tried to download it was saying setup error. I tried http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/gimpshop_2.2.8_fix1_setup.exe.

I have an Illegal CS2

-- Posted by Nobodys Listening at 8:38 am on May 5, 2007

I have Photoshop 7.0 and I know a lot of my cyber friends have gimp, but all most all of them have compared them with PS and say it's not as good. I also have paint shop pro, which is pretty cool as well. I've never actually tried gimp, so I think I might take a look at it, to give my own opinion.

-- Posted by cl2yp71c at 8:21 am on June 12, 2007

I have tried GIMP...and it's just not the same as photoshop(CS3)... I guess it's just cause I'm so used to photoshop that GIMP seems totally inferior...well that and the price difference XD

-- Posted by Hexer at 8:44 am on Aug. 10, 2007

I think I preferred GIMP in its original interface, but gimpshop is a valid idea.

As for now I think I'll stick with that paid version of Adobe Photoshop CS2.

The best thing would be for Adobe to be kinder in pricing their student versions. If they merely half the cost they may sell up to twice as many...

Then again, once you invest in one version like I did, the upgrades are reasonable priced.

Lol

The only reason people pirate software is because the companies place ridiculous prices on them.

For example... Adobe Photoshop CS3 costs just under £400, who has 400 quid to spend on graphics editing? Professionals who can get that back in 1 job maybe, but not normal people.

BitTorrent is my friend. :)

Student edition. It's a full version and the extended version is only about £120 then. The only restriction is legally you can't make money from work done on that version.

Yeah, but £120 is still a hell of a lot for a student who has to pay rent, living expenses, education expenses and tuition fees. Add that you can't make money from the work and you're paying £120 for something to make work for deviantart and not much else. You couldn't even sell the prints on DA under the rule. :(

So true. If your an artist, you buy your paints/canvas/paper/oils/brushed etc, because they're your tools. For a graphic artist, photoshop is a key edition to your digital capability's, and 169 euro / $299 is a solid, and relatively cheap investment if your serious about graphics.

It's still such a shame that Adobe is quite harsh on students compared to other companies. I remember when you could get the Macromedia suite as a student for around £100.

Don't be small minded...   If your studying photography them you need to buy an SLR camera, if your studying art, you need supplies, if your studying many other subjects you need £100's in books....  as such, photoshop for £120 is an acceptable expense for a graphics student! If your talented then you only need a £10 set of french curves, and a cheapo set of pencils/ink with some paper for your rest.

Can't turn my back on CS3...it rocks! Plus, the systems at school all equipped with CS3 as well...just seems like the right thing to use... and I'm used to the cmd's as well.
