Last Thursday as I was walking back from the student union, I ran into an old friend of mine from high school. There was a big blood drive going on and being that he works for the Red Cross, he was keeping pretty busy. I asked him how things were going, whether he was going to school and all that......he said he wasn't going to school, was just working and so then I asked him how the Red Cross was treatin him. What he said, kinda got me going...... He said he makes a lil more than $14/hour and basically, the bulk of what he does is paperwork and bloodwork (sticking the needles etc.) plus a lil more complicated stuff. He also said he brought in just over $40K last year..........*(starting pay for this according to him is around $12.20 and he's been there for quite some time, since HS grad. I think) Though a job like his is more of a permanent, FT thing as opposed to being just some PT/Summer-Seasonal deal.....I'd sure like to get on there. If I did get on there and got max hours during the summer, just worked my ass off, he said I could put $4K in the bank easy.....if I made another $1-2K ontop of that.....that would give me enough to get/maintain a car while I'm down at school....and would also give me the opp. to keep on working....w/o having to quit when I came back down. I called my mom and told her about all of that and she said she'd get in touch with one of our neighbors, who works for the Red Cross back home, and ask about that. There's this other possibility too. My older brother is a mid-level manager for Xerox and said that he could possibly get me a PT summer job...don't have many details there, but I would definitely be getting 30-40hrs a week (if not more) and pay would be just a little less than the R.C. there (between $9-12 I think) Compared to the grocery store gig I got going now........(working nights/25-30hrs a wk./$8.35-hr) either of these would be a nice step up. Am keeping my fingers crossed

That does sound like a nice job, although you said that he made just over $40,000 last year making over $14 per hour? Let's say that he makes $14.50 per hour. $40,000/$14.40=~2758 hours worked that year~53 hours per week. YIKES!

Given the stats, I agree totally with Jenny, 53 hours per week I would say is just a little too much. I have to say the job sounds nice but look at it this way, would you enjoy it for 53 hours EVERY week?

Well, he doesn't have to make that much, and $12-$14 per hour is a very nice hourly wage. It sounds like a decent job, but making $40,000 a year is a bit unrealistic.

12-14 an hour ain't bad

He said at one point, he was working 63hrs a week, but that's because he had bought a new truck and wanted to shore up his bank acct. A job like this could definitely help me out long after the summer's over....... Not only could I have more money during the school year, but I could really shore up my own bank acct. and closer to graduation.....when I get out of the dorms and move into my g/f's place, helping out w/rent & what not wouldn't be that big of a problem. Plus, I could support myself at least somewhat well until I found a more reliable FT job. Oh and a friend told me "yeah man, the Red Cross would look a hell of alot better than 'Bag N Save' on your resume"

Very good point about the resume. Do they offer benefits too? Probably health. Is it technically a government run program or is it just not-for-profit? It would be indeed a very interesting field to get into. I hope that you get the job simply so that you can share your experiences. You've actually sparked an interest for me in looking up if they're hiring in my area. The good thing about working for Red Cross is that they have offices everywhere, so even if you move you still can have job security. Hmmm...
