I would switch to mac if they played games made for PC no strings attached. If they did that I would get one.

(just warning: this is a RANT, sry) the problem here is that its NOT a 'windows' computer as u put it. and that greately offends me as a linux zealot. Its called i686 (or x86) hardware architecture. mac is called PPC (power pc). and might i add that buying vendor x86 machines (dell/gateway)is only good for laptops, seeing as how its very hard to get your own parts to build a laptop (th only place ive seen so far is ebay) build your own goddamn x86 'puter and get a quality machine instead of shitty 'dell' hardware(and most likely you WILL spend less for a better machine if you know where to shop). it only takes a couple of days to learn how to build one too. and might i add that x86 is quite inefficent, i would put out the cash for an amd64 system.

you pay more for a mac because it is worth it- you pay for what you got, if you bought a cheap PC desktop then you'd regret it. Up with Apple!

For one thing, how much does the extra warranty for a Dell cost? How long is theirs standard? Checked on Dell's site, and it's basically the same warranty deal:
Limited Warranty2 and Mail-In Service: The Inspiron 1000 comes standard with a 90 Day Limited Warranty2 and Mail-In Service. But for ultimate peace of mind on this new PC, upgrade your service to 1, 2, or 3 years of Limited Warranty2 and Mail-In Service and add CompleteCare3 Accidental Damage Protection. See the Service and Support tab for more information.
The only problem is that it's MAIL IN service, and oftentimes they end up not being too careful with your data, and only support WinXP. Got Gentoo installed? Even if it's a hardware problem, and you are sure of it, they don't really wanna talk to you on the phone support. Take my iBook right into the Apple store (there's two within 10 miles, so i'm happy), and they'll fix it right there in front of me. I can also go into the "Genius Bar" and get help whenever I want it. In addition, the most basic dell laptop... Does it have a 15" flat screen built in? No. How about you compare apples to apples (pun not intended). The iMac isn't even currently shipping, so you can't talk about it! And the eMac is the direct comparison, and you need to factor in if Dell is going to charge you for a 15" CRT in that too! In addition, let me ask you, why do you care so much about another $250 dollars for a computer that's better in so many ways. The slowest Dell laptop will NOT make you happy in 2-3 years. My ex's Dell desktop is now 3 years old, and it SUCKS. I've used Macs that are 3 years old, and they still do the job great! How about this? Buy a Dell now, i'll take my two macs. We try to resell them in a year to upgrade to the newest thing. I bet I will have less depreciation. Don't believe me? Check eBay for an older Macs and then Dells of the same era. The Macs still sell for their value. If I got a Dell a year ago, I wouldn't be able to sell it for much at all. My Dual processor G4, still will fetch quite a bit in fact. AND the Mac will still do what I need a few years. It's like saying a Kia is a better car than a Honda. or that a Honda is better than a BMW, simply because of the price differences. But the margin on these computers is even less! And in addition so many of these computer companies still ship with 128mb memory! What the hell? I haven't had a comptuer with less than 512mb in about 4 years! In the mid 90's I had ~160mb installed, when most people had 24mb at the same time, so i guess i'm ahead of the trends. I've owned 75+ PCs (hard to count) and ran every OS I could get my hands on. I have two Macs personally, and another at work, and I will NEVER own another x86 based system.

^^^^^ you are my friend, the only reason i run x86 is cuz in 16, no jorb and poor :( ive always wanted a good i/power book to work with :D

so does anyone have a rebuttal lfor my arguement?
-- Posted by sasquatch at 5:54 pm on Oct. 3, 2004
PC's are MUCH better gaming machines, u can constantly upgrade ur vid card, unlike a mac, and u can get games sooner, since most take a while to be released on a mac (most, not all), and they almost always get a higher fps then a comparable mac cuz of the architecture, altho i would do image/multimedia editting on a mac anyday over a PC

sasquatch it sounds like all your doing is spitting back something from Pc frickin magazine. A whole lot they know.

Yea... thats advertisement for ya, people think a 3ghz pentium 4 is fast, why are many of the computers on that link of yours iunder 2ghz? Crummy Intel standard...
-- Posted by TiMmMeE at 8:18 pm on Oct. 22, 2004
This was preventing me from making the big switch. Macs are expensive as is, but I'd have to rebuy all that software shit to work for it? Don't have that kind of funds. :p
-- Posted by BostonDave at 6:45 pm on Oct. 23, 2004
What software do you need? Office? Use OpenOffice, it's free The apples come with a TON of usable software. And in addition you can get GREAT student discounts (like 1/5th the normal price for some software) if you look around. That covers Photoshop, etc... And some companies have crossgrades for platforms. Just call them and ask about them! And umm, Mephisto... read about what each of these computers, or farms of comptuers actually are... It's not just some desktop comptuer.

For example. the earth simulator (currently #1 still i think) has over 5000 processors.
-- Posted by sriehl at 8:44 pm on Oct. 23, 2004
You cant compare clockspeeds of different processors. An intel scale is different from the Sparc scale from the Alpha scale from the PPC, ect. Compare apples with apples and oranges with oranges.

First of all! I like macs, beacuse there faster and the FACT that you hardly have to worry about getting a virus or a hidden trojan horse! Sure macs may not have very good compatibiltiy, but thats why they have the virtual pc software, so that you can use lousy WINDOWS programs on your mac! (iT'S not like we want Windows programs anyway!)

First off - Apple has started almost, if not all, everything in the computer world. Steve J. and Steve W. built the first personal computer in Steve's garage. They invented it all. Sure, there may have been computers back in the day that were 7 stories high and 90 stories long, but this is the personal computer. Also, Mac's arn't about looks over performance. Sure, they look the best out there (in my own opinion). However, the G5 was the first commercially avalible 64 bit processor on the market. Also - look at any benchmarks that compare the latest G5 to the latest P4. The G5 just takes it. I do agree on the gaming factor, there arn't as many games avalible for Macs at the same time of PCs. However, Aspyr does a great job of porting the games to Mac in a reasonable amount of time. Also - if you're going to game, then don't buy a Mac. It's a waste of a great computer. Don't get me wrong, Windows has come a long way. But - Mac OS X still blows it out of the water. Also, everything thinks Longhorn is going to be crazy and good, but really - it's just Windows XP suped up a little and has better 64 bit support. Woop-dee-do. My dad had a 6100 (the first Mac that was worth buying) and ever sense then, I've been hooked. I got my first 603e 200mhz UMAX (a Mac clone) in 1996 for Christmas. That thing was a beast. From that point on, I kept getting newer and faster Macs. Not once has a Mac actually made me hate it. Unlike Windows, Mac OS has never crashed for no reason, it's never slowed down due to memory usage, it's never even crashed due to high processor usage. Windows, even XP, crashes because you don't restart your machine within 24 hours. My Mac has been on for probably going on a good 2 weeks now, and isn't slow, isn't complaining about anything, it's like I just started the thing up. Mac OS X definatly takes Windows with that factor. Well, ending my long post - please forgive me - I'd just like to say: a) Get your facts straight before you post something and try to sound badass b) Don't bash Macs just because you're a hard core windows or linux user and have never used a Mac (maybe your experiences with Macs havn't been that great, but get with someone who knows their stuff. You'll like it so much better) c) Mac's are expensive but as the phrase goes - You get what you pay for d) Look at how far Apple has come - they were struggling for a while, but look at the iPod...The number ONE MP3 player in the world. Look at the iBook and the PowerBook - both great and popular machines that never fail. Look at the G5 - the first personal computer with a 64bit processor that was avalible to the public. Also, I almost forgot...When the G4 came out - they couldn't sell it in certain countries because they said that the processors themselves, were too powerful. They were afraid that terrorists would get ahold of them and use them for guidence systems in missiles. Have you ever heard of a PC that can't be sold in a country due to that? I didn't think so - and if you have, was it in the news? This was. Sorry, once again for my lengthy post - it just erks me when some stupid person thinks a PC is better because they have a good one and they just bash Apple because they've never used one and just assume it's shitty. I also apologize for any spelling or gramatical errors. - Jeremy M. A proud and loyal Mac user. (Edited by JeremyM at 5:26 pm on Nov. 3, 2004)
