SO i downloaded this Gimpshop thingy,and now my problem is that when I cut a portion of the main image, i can't make the layer set at the back because the cut portion has a white or black background instead of transparent,and I can't figure out how to make the cut portion transparent..anyone..pls help me out...thank u people

Are you working on an image that supports it? Such as gif or png. Remember, you can't have transparency in jpg's.

Edit: I said you can have transparency in jpg's....which of course I wrong. Typical me to typo that.

yeah i am...everytime i cut out smth it leaves behind a white background therefore i can't set the layer at the back:-/

Ok, why not when you first open up gimpshop make a new layer set to transparent and then hide the background layer (which is white) using the little eye.

Such as I have done here:
