Stop saying "don't label me." Stop complaing that you're unique, that you don't fit into a peghole.

No one cares. Everyone labels everyone. We look at people, and we generalize. Because a lot of the time, it's right. All this bullshit about uniqueness has convinced us that labels are of the devil. They're not. Nine out of ten times, the kid with spiked hair, Left-Over Crack patches, and punk clothes is fine with drugs and leans to the left pretty hard politically. Sure, there are punk looking kids that don't fit that category. But not enough to stop categorizing. After all, what's the worst that happens? You assume that the person is something that they're not, and either they prove you wrong or they don't, in which case they probably don't deserve to be recognized as unique.

If you want to be seen as unique, act unique. People are going to immediately categorize you, because that's how our minds and society fucking work. If you don't like being put in a peghole, do something to set yourself aside from it, douche. Don't just tell people not to do what's natural and proper.

I don't mind if they label me actually. They probably label me as the geeky looking guy who is intelligent but sucks at school, which I don't mind at all.
I try to show them what I am... and I guess they get the right message lol
And I do try to act unique. They might know me as the mysterious boy who wears the same jacet everyday. And when they see that boy explaining some scieitific thing in a way that makes them laugh, they label you. But I think YOU have the control on what other people might think of you when they see you. and as you said, You need to know how the people's minds work in order for you uto get the 'right' label.

So basically basically your saying its ok to prejudge people? What if I was to say oh he must have aids, all gays have aids....Even though its not true, it would have the same effect.  Even if the label fits doesn't mean you have the right to point it out.  People can do what they want and dress how they want.  Does that mean that they should be pushed aside in to another category?  No, you can catergarize all you want.  But i do not do that.  Every person is different.  Not like we all think the same things...jeez

-- Posted by Discordany at 8:46 pm on April 14, 2006

Ehh I dont mind, generally.
If someone calls me a drama geek/ kid..... I say hell yes!
If someone calls me emo, I laugh.
If someone says I look calm and unemotional, I take it as a compliment.... even though its not true. At all.
And if someone calls me a ditzy boy crazy girl..... I prove them wrong.

Those are the ones that I get called, anyways.... only one of them is true. I mean... whoop dee doo...... so someone prejedged me..... we all do it, even if we dont mean to.

Guess what, babe?

I think generalizing somebody's health is pretty damn off topic. Any fucked up, Christian idiot would probably generalize a gay man having AIDs. But you know what? Some people, who do categorize, are probably smarter than that.

When I see skinny idiots with hair "eating their faces" I automatically hate them. Why? Because I fucking hate emos. They're all the same. They aren't unique.

So basically basically your saying its ok to prejudge people?

Yes.

What if I was to say oh he must have aids, all gays have aids....Even though its not true, it would have the same effect.

Then you'd be wrong. Obviously.

Even if the label fits doesn't mean you have the right to point it out.

Sure you do. You have the right to point out whatever you'd like. If I want to say that you're probably a liberal, I can.

You're probably a liberal.

Could I be wrong? Sure. But it's my right to look at your statements on this thread and your sexuality and draw a conclusion from that, right or wrong.

People can do what they want and dress how they want.

And other people can pick up on the messages that their dress sends.

Does that mean that they should be pushed aside in to another category?

Who said anything about pushing people into a category? This is where my entire point lies. If I decide that as a bisexual with an anarchy symbol for an avatar you're a liberal, that doesn't do shit to you. It's just me picking up, correctly or incorrectly, on clues that you're giving me. Because that's logical. I certainly am open to the possibility that this is not true, because absolutes are stupid like that, but I also understand probability and refuse to ignore evidence because of some pathetic idea that everyone is independant of the image they display.

LOL. Lovely.

*clap clap clap*

I've always been pissed of by the whiney threads about this but I've never bothered to find the time to say it.

I salute you.

Label me whatever the fuck you want, I don't care.

I'll label myself bitches.

-- Posted by katyduck at 12:54 pm on April 15, 2006

I 100% agree. People refusing to conform to labelling and claiming themselves to be "individual" or "alternative", or who have an emo haircut, slice their wrists, write an Internet blog full of heart-ache, photo-whore, dress in tight clothing and listen to whiney angsty music and then go mad at you for calling them emo (which they so fucking are) drive me absolutely crazy. I'LL LABEL IF I WANT TO LABEL, YO. And just because you don't like the label you fit under doesn't mean that you aren't one of the masses that you try to be.

I agree with Wilder, if you don't like being labeled, stop paying attention.

-- Posted by kitkat at 4:29 am on April 16, 2006

labelling isn't a good thing. yeah, everyone does it but that doesn't make it alright. all labels do is make people stereotype and what good has that ever done?

-- Posted by ilovecookies at 8:12 am on April 16, 2006

Right on, sister!

I don't really fit into a peghole, though. Meh. I'm just bland.

-- Posted by The Oath at 8:34 am on April 16, 2006

B... b... but when you label me it takes my individuality away.

*prances off to get razors*

-- Posted by NoMansLand at 10:25 am on April 16, 2006

I completely agree, i'm happy for people to lable me, in fact generally those who dont wanna be labbleled are hardcore something and therefore have not really left themselevs open to much else, it isn't predgujuice(SP?????) its just what the brain does, GET THE FUCK OVER IT!

-- Posted by Wilder at 11:01 am on April 16, 2006

It saves lives every day. Because of steriotyping, people don't walk by that alley full of sketchy looking guys in their early 20's in gang colors. They stay away from people wandering the streets that look like heroin junkies. If a creepy looking guy in a white van pulls over next to you when you're walking around at night and asks if you want to see the puppies he's delivering or have some candy, your steriotype him as a kidnapper/ child molester and leave.

-- Posted by samantha123 at 12:59 pm on April 16, 2006

I think we all need to stop saying "stop labeling him/her" because your voice means NOTHING, ZIP, NATTA, ZERO anymore! People are STILL going to label each other, and are STILL going to continue doing what they have always been doing. Just learn to accept it and shut your pieholes already, because only you know what is true and what isn't true, and that is all that counts.

-- Posted by ConservativeKat at 5:02 pm on April 16, 2006

I don't care about labels period. People should know who they are, and not care about what everyone else says or thinks

-- Posted by T3h D4zMaN at 1:15 am on April 17, 2006

CXongrats on the first rant ive read which i didnt hafta flame. Well done mate. My label is the guy who tries to fit in but just drifts from one group of people to another. ands its right.

-- Posted by Big Red at 1:23 am on April 17, 2006

I agree - I'm so sick of people whining about stereotypes. For fucks sake, they're a universal, convenient way of describing people - what is so wrong about that?

That is true in many cases. Even if you claim you aren't one label, you fit into another.
