I have received many messages from members asking me what the heck is going on with LiveWire. It's a problem with lack of memory. The amount of data that we ask the server to work with is immense. I have decided to do something I would rather not do, but I feel it's necessary. I have taken 60% of archived topics offline. They are safely stored, but not accessible. Thus, the amount of data the server must shunt into memory has been effectively cut in half. I have also doubled LiveWire's working memory (RAM) from 2GB to 4GB. I have also disabled Topic History from appearing directly in the sidebar. This removes a dependency and increases overall reliability. I'm as curious as you are to know if these changes will mean overall stability.

Glad to hear you are working on the problems. I have to say, when the server was up i was seeing memory utilisation of around 65% upwards, but not often over 80% Is this just part of the problem or was i watching my control panel at the wrong times? Also, if i remember correctly, the fresh topics list expands when more people are using LW. Would it not be prudent to removing this function?

Thanks David. You're awesome. :D

Even if you did hesitate to do it, you made a decision to better the functionality of LiveWire, so of course we support that decision. We can live without archived topics, and like others I'll have my fingers crossed too.

I am extremely upset about the archived topics gone. Will they be in storage...forever? I want them back. I've been checking around and all my absolute favorite topics that I enjoyed going back to are not there anymore. Is it possible that someday they will be back? There must be some sort of alternative solution for this. I know you are doing this for the good of LW, but it doesn't make it any easier. I was quite attached to a lot of those topics. (I know, I'm crazy). (Edited by breathe deep at 8:27 am on May 10, 2006)

Thanks David, you're awesome. I'm quite content witht the fact that LiveWire is at least working now, I didn't really use the archived topic anyways. Good luck with the changes, hopefully they will work well. -crosses fingers-

I actually like this idea. Not a whole lot of people check in the archived topics that I know of. So there will only be sporadic whining as oppose to the constant whining that occurs when livewire goes down. Kudos.

Is the Archived Topics thing permanent? It'd be a shame if I never got to see any of my super-old topics again.

is it because of the increased members that we're having such a problem now? because i thought with our last server upgrade thingamabobber (yep, i know computer stuff really well ) we weren't supposed to have more problems

Yup, it wasn't all that long ago when there used to be so few people on-line compared to now. i haven't seen the number of users go under 2 digits for ages....

If in the future LW did obtain a new server upgrade, would the archived topics be able to be seen again? Meh, either way it's good that things are being done to improve LW. I guess losing a bit over half of the archived topics isn't so bad
-- Posted by Jesusfreak04 at 8:24 am on May 10, 2006
hopefully it stays where it works.
