I haven't hosted an art contest in a good amount of time. I feel that now is the time to do so, especially in an attempt to retain some of the traffic Swift's photography contest may have brought into this forum.

Intent:
The contest is to capture some sort of humanity. Obviously this means that at least one person must be the subject of your piece. I don't care what emotion you're trying to show, as long as you get one. Albeit, I don't want to see 500 pictures of smiling faces. That's not what I'm looking for.

    Rules:
  • Due to the rules of LiveWire, you MAY NOT submit photos of people under the age of 13. HOWEVER, thanks to the graciousness of Allie, aka DoveLove, you may PM the entries to me and they will be considered in the contest. IF YOU DO NOT ABIDE BY THIS RULE AND PLACE PICTURES NOT PERTAINING TO LIVEWIRE'S GUIDELINES IN THIS THREAD, OR CAUSE A FUSS OVER THIS RULE, YOU'RE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
  • Obviously, if there's no human in your piece, it is not acceptable.
  • Any visualmedium is accepted. I have nothing against poetry, but sorting through the tons of horrible poems that may be entered is not worth the few good ones.
  • I DO NOT CONSIDER PHOTOSHOP OR ANY OTHER PHOTO-ALTERING PROGRAMS AS A MEDIUM, AND IT SHOULD NOT BE USED.
  • There are 4 exceptions to the photoshop rule where photoshop may be used: 1) To turn the picture into black and white. 2) To change the OVERALL contrast of a picture. 3) To change the OVERALL saturation of color. 4) You may also crop pictures if necessary.

    Entrance:
  • There is no entrance fee.
  • You may enter as many times as you like, but please alter the emotions. I don't want to see 3 entries of your kissy-faced boyfriend.
  • When entering a piece, be sure to add which medium you used.

    Judging:
  • Each piece will be judged on two qualities; the difficulty of making the piece, and most importantly, the strength of the emotion shown.
  • I often like to judge myself, but I will accept 1-3 others who would like to help judge this contest.

    Prizes:
  • There will be 3 places, and possibly honorable mentions.
  • For now, the prizes stand as 150 for first, 100 for second, 50 for third. But, I plan on giving away all the reward points I have over 2,000. For instance, when this contest ends, if I have 2,642 reward points, I will distribute 642 points to the winners.

THE END OF THIS CONTEST IS SET AT JULY 10TH
I will talk to Audrey and get this up on the contest page.

ONE HUGE THING I MISSED, THE PIECE MUST BE YOUR OWN WORK.
The following would constitute as your own work:
For Photos-
1) You have taken the photo.
2) You are the subject of the photo.
For All Other Mediums-
You are the one who has produced the piece. You may reproduce a famous artwork, or use a photograph taken by somebody else.

If you reproduce a work or use another's photograph, you must cite it using the same format as one of the following:
  • Original (painting) done by (Andrew Wyeth.)
  • Original (photo) by (Andy Warhol.)
  • Original photo by (my friend.)

Anything in parenthesis would be changed to fit the piece.

Since I never bothered to make this clear; when I say a human must be present in the photos, that does not necessarily mean their face.

Ah, yes, I"ll edit that into the rules. I just kind of figured cropping was implied.

To be honest, I don't remember what camera I used for these. It was probably my friend's Nikon FG.

I suck, but here's what I found when i dug through my pics.

-A pic at the moving wall.  Very emotional because my dad was a vet.  he was crying, looking at the names of friends he lost.

-Yeah, I guess lonely.

-Same thing, different view.

I heartily support this contest. If my faith in the LiveWire public is well-placed, this is going to go off.

Expect entries in a week or so, I should guess.

For now, there are some points headed your way.

a poem

Wayward Plane

In the beginning there was a boy
Who had dreams and aspirations for joy
When he was four
He had an urge to soar
Get above all of the rest
Fly high with some of the best
At age five he had soul and drive
To get in a plane to hope to thrive
But at age six
He fell into a bad mix
His mother is dead and his father a bum
Constantly reassured him he was dumb
As he hit eight
A cruel twist of fate
Father had come down with cancer
No one he knew had the answer
When he hit nine
He was treated like swine
Father was angry and had him hit
He was depressed but he wouldn’t admit
As he hit the big ten
His dreams began to soar again
Teachers and friends pull him from his ditch
It was almost as if he found his niche
Father is dead at age thirteen
With this, his heart grows cold and mean
The plane in his mind fly’s farther away
As the drugs in his head are there to stay
Dropped from school at age fifteen
Hope is lost, as it would seem.
Drugs consumed the young aged boy
Robbing him permanently of his joy
Broke into a store at just eighteen
For his life, this set the final scene
The worst way for dreams to be lost
He will soon pay the ultimate cost
Now it’s a week before release
His dreams soar again like wild geese
But an event is occurring that he cannot stop,
His cellmate drops him with a violent flop
He feels a pain as never before
A searing pain burns deep in his chest
As the knife is plunged deep into his breast
In the final breathes of the young boys’ life
He speaks “Is this what I earn for all my strife?”
Pondering the decisions of his life now past
He wishes that he could make it last
Realizing his actions were hardly the best
The boy of four’s dreams are laid to rest
The mood in the cell is all but bright
As his plane flies silently into the night

All of them were over 13..... Thanks for not even bothering to ask me. That's real classy of you.

Frank, please do not harass her. It's LW guidelines, and while cliched, it still holds true in this situation that it's better to be safe than sorry. I have your entries, and it's thanks to Allie that they were not completely omitted from the contest.

-- Posted by MoonlitEden at 9:45 pm on June 5, 2006

Yeah, one of mine was gone too.  I had completely forgotten about that rule.

They're all older than 13.  Except my cat.  He's two.  But...he shouldn't count.

And ummm..the emotions are all lust.  Lust is an emotion right?  Well, it is now.
