So my sister needed a laptop for school, and she wanted a MacBook.  Now, I've grown a personal hatred for apple's computers since the switch to intel, but i'm not going to pass judgement.

Not knowing very much about computers, I offered to do the research and such for her.  She wanted a black macbook so naturally, I compared it to the step down, the wite macbook.  The Specs are almost exactly the same:

Black:
13.3-inch widescreen display

1280 x 800 resolution

2.0GHz Intel Core Duo

512MB memory (2x256MB SODIMMs)

80GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive2

SuperDrive (DVD±RW, CD-RW)

White:
13.3-inch widescreen display

1280 x 800 resolution

2.0GHz Intel Core Duo

512MB memory (2x256MB SODIMMs)

60GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive2

SuperDrive (DVD±RW, CD-RW)

Source

If you upgrade the hard drive on the white MacBook (to 80 gig), it costs $50.  So, if ther is a $200 difference for the base models, and a $150 difference after you even out the specs, where is the cost discrepancy  coming from?  Colored Plastic?

This is ridiculous.

Hahaha! It's not a Mac thing though. I remember when I wanted a PC custom made for me a long time ago.. the same exact pc, all black costed much more. Why? I don't know.. but its not a Mac thing.

I've heard of that before, charging more for the black. But I think it does look better.

I agree and I wouldn't personally pay the premium for the black version. It does make business sense though.

Don't complain about it. You are not forced to buy it. Just don't buy it then.

Why shouldn't he complain? It is rediculous to charge 150 more for a different color.

-- Posted by mephisto mortis at 8:31 pm on July 27, 2006

The problem is that if I wasn't on my A game, my sister would of gotten ripped off by a crook company with overpriced products.  You'd be pissed too.

Ya, I'm sure you could of found countless PCs that charged more for the black case back when the major switch into black from silver was happening.

Maybe it's supply and demand. There's a higher demand for the more popular colours, adn the price is forced down.

The color of it.  Some people are crazy when it comes to colors of things to charge more, like I heard about cars that are fire engine red have to pay more for insurance.  Crazy and greedy people are to blame.

When Apple created black iPods, they sold like hotcakes over the white ones. Apple is simply "milking the cow" since the demand on the black color is high. Whether you think it is selfish or not, Apple is a business company and is simply trying to make money. Again, basic economics that you should've learned in High School (Or just plain common sense).
