I was talking with a friend of mine who is getting ready to leave for college within the next week and she realized she had no idea what to take with her. It made me realize that some freshmen will be in the same situation. So here goes; Here's a list* of things you should consider bringing; - Alarm clock - Backpack - Bedspread, pillow, and mattress pad (most schools use the x-long twin size mattresses so you would have to buy special sheets which can be found at Wal-Marts, K-Marts, Targets, and other stores- just ask a sales associate about it and they could help you out) - Blankets and sheets - Clothes hangers - Comfortable walking shoes - Computer disks (3.5 floppy, CD-RW, and/or Zip disk-- but most people use jumpdrives anymore) and printer paper - Desk lamp - Dust rag, dust spray - First aid kit (you can buy one already packed for you or you can just create one yourself) - Laundry supplies (liquid detergent, softener, stain treatment, and a basket/bag, drying rack-- whatever you feel you'll need) - Office supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, tape, stapler, paper clips, scissors, etc) - Raincoat / umbrella (recommend two-one to have and one to lose) - Rolls of quarters (for laundry) - Shower bucket (to carry your shower supplies) - Shower shoes - Telephone and/or answering machine (some schools prefer a certain frequency due to wireless internet, so check with your school on this to avoid problems) - Towels and washcloths - Hygiene accessories (hairdryer, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush/comb, pads/tampons, etc) - Batteries - Flashlight/Radio (for emergencies) - Water filter (a lot cheaper to get than buying bottles) - Kitchen needs (plates, cups, utensils, can/bottle opener, chip clips, etc) - Storage boxes (under the bed storage is really nice) - Waste basket (some schools already provide one) - Adhesive hooks, tacky adhesive, and mounting tape (bottle of Goo-Gone just in case you want to remove them in the future) - Bulletin/dry erase board with supplies - Toolkit with basic tools - Phone cord/Ethernet cord for computer (some schools already provide these) - surge protector and/or extension cords - bicycle and equipment to go with it (emergency tire repair kit, small bike toolkit, helmet, bike lock, etc) Also, if you plan to live with a roommate to try your best to communicate with them on what things to bring and to avoid bringing two of the same thing (like TVs, box fans, computers, etc). Try your best not to bring everything you own or a lot of clothes. Just make sure you have about 2-3 weeks worth of clothes if anything. Make sure it's a wide variety of different sorts; pjs, dress, casual, warm weather, cold weather, etc. *Used Ohio University's list of suggested items to bring as example with some editing. [Updated for the comin school of 2007-2008]

Batteries, hairdryer, flashlight (?), comfortable PJs (for weekends, because sometimes you're just too lazy to get dressed). I found my water filter (I had a Brita pitcher) to be AWESOME. It's so much easier than buying bottled water (and no way was I drinking So Cal tap water!).

Go for it! The better the list, the better help. I may just add some of yours onto mine if you guys dont mind. That way they dont have to search through all the posts to figure it out.

Don't forget to put a whiteboard outside of your room (on the door) so that people can leave you messages and notes!

Some other things to consider: -A mini fridge (if you have $$ to spare. I got one for my room $35 at a yard sale, its a old mini bar and its worked for the last 5 years and still does) -Curtains -Shower curtain (If you have your own bathroom in your dorm room) -A dresser or (reccomended by me) big tubberware containers to store clothes in, slide them under your bed to save space in your often crowded dorm room) -Whiteboard and/or corkboard - great for keeping your deadlines organized. -And an agenda for the same purpose -large poster of the periodic table of elements (to be cool, even if your going to like law school) -Laundry basket and/or hamper -You may want to consider a safe, strong box, or somewhere else to hide your valubles - you don't know your room mate, and you don't know who they might bring over.

I'll have to bring tampons?
-- Posted by JennyColada at 9:04 pm on Aug. 16, 2006
Oh, and microwavable popcorn is nice. EVERYONE comes running when they smell it.

For females, duh. It's an ideal list anyway, so there will be things on it that you may not have to take with you at all.

Well what if you have a lady friend over and she is starting to feel a little... unclean? I guess a lot of that stuff depends on where you live. Around here we have great water supplies, and water filters aren't required.
-- Posted by MoonlitEden at 10:21 pm on Aug. 16, 2006
You're one of the lucky people. The water here is disgusting.
-- Posted by lollerpwner at 10:22 pm on Aug. 16, 2006
Some people around here get the filters, but they just aren't needed.

Well, how do you use any type of water filter if you live in a public dorm and share a bathroom with all the girls on your floor? Where do you use this?? Are you even allowed?

You don't need to use the type of filter that fits over your faucet. They make water filter pitchers for situations just like this. Just take it to the sink in the bathroom (sometimes schools have water fountains or seperate sinks for this), fill it up, and let the filter do it's job. Follow the directions to make sure you're doing it right. Here's what it looks like;

Thank you so much!! That looks really neat, I need to look into getting one. Do you know about how big it is or a price range?

I've got one of those - about 30cm tall, bit less than 15cm wide? You buy it and then a few times a year change the cartridge.

I would like to add a footlocker to the list. They are great for stuff that you want out of the way or locked up.

These Can Be Purchased upon Arrival Paper towels Trash bags Light bulbs All-purpose cleaner Zip lock bags Kitchen storage containers Laundry detergent (tablets are easiest to manage) Fabric softener (sheets are easiest to manage) Dish soap Wet wipes Tissues
lol, technically, everything can be bought upon arrival, not just those few things you mentioned. Unless your college is in the middle of nowhere.

Sometimes its just best to get them before hand because anything can happen. And not to mention how crowded the stores become that are nearby to the campus just because other people decide to buy them at the same time. I mean, the day I move into my dorm will be crazy because it's a rather popular day for all students to move in.

Air fresheners, A robe, Fingernail clippers and a storage container that isn't clear. (so you can hide things you aren't suppose to have). ahaha.

This is a cool topic. My sister said she already put a laptop on layaway for me for my graduation but even if I don't get that, LSU has 24-hour computer labs in their dorms. Awesome! Anyways, gosh, I really hope I can most of these things when I go...in like over a year..
-- Posted by sabakk at 8:45 am on Jan. 18, 2007
The computers at the school are fine but it is so much easier to have your own laptop and printer.

Very true. I don't know about a lot of schools but my school provides free ink for thier printers, and if you haven't priced ink refills... they're pretty damn expensive. So check with the school beforehand to see if they do the same and how the whole computer situation works out in the dorms.
-- Posted by madmac at 12:06 pm on Mar. 25, 2007
All good questions! Deciding what to bring with you is a really tough question. To make it worse you dont need the same things at ever school. Some have printers you can use for free... so why bring a printer? Others dont. I found this website.... http://www.ratethedorms.com. They have reviews of dorms all over the united states and some helpful articles.

Also, if you ask your professor ahead of time, they'll usually let you have your laptop out during class. It makes taking notes a lot more easy
