I was going to post this as 'Anonymous' (I thought it'd be ironic) but I want credit for this post.

The anonymous posts are not truly anonymous. If they were, MODS and Davjs wouldn't be able to see them.

Can we call them 'anonymous' then? Is this fair?

Just an idea I was pondering...discuss.

It is fair. What are the mods going to do? Harass you?

We have to be able to have the power to see them so we can moderate them.

What if someone spammed up the forums as anonymous? We would not be able to stop them if we couldn't find out who they are.

The anonymous post status is a label. Just like "gay" or "goth" or whatever. It does not neccessarily mean that that post will be entirely anonymous. It's just that it's "anonymous".

Mods and administators need to be able to find out who the post is from for practical reasons. It's not displayed with the post.

If you said something though, and the MODS banned you, wouldn't you no longer be anonymous?

When you go to the doctor and he promise to keep your record confidential or in your case "anonymous," but yet he/she have access to your record, would you feel your privacy is still infringed? I believe this is exceptional as long as absolutly nobody from the public have access to your record other than the doctor

If you said something that bad behind the cover of a shield such as Anonymous, which was intended to be used for people who have friends on the forum (and don't want them finding out about their problems/sexuality/whatever), and to abuse that privilege without the mods knowing about your identity is foolish.

It's been done...

I'd say it's a fair system.  Abuse of an anonymous system will always occur, so this minor inconvenience is actually a benefit for the livewire community.

THere is excessive abuse of the anonymous system, those in charge need to control it.

You do realise the irony in all this:-

Just because The name "blackadder" appears, DOES NOT MEAN I AM any more or less accountable for my actions than if i posted under the anonymous header.

The only time this isn't true is when friends, or others -- in "real" life know that I post here and my handle is.....

^ in my case, that was only ever once, but he was banned (x3) so nowadays I, as "blackadder" remain anyomous.

I have likened to it before, but the anyomous tag is a mask ontop of a mask -- pretty pointles*

*(unless the oringal mask was in some way defficient!)

If ur a mod then ur meant to be grown up enough not to take advantage it.

Intellectual forum, dear. We use real words like "your" here.

My opinion has pretty much been made here. The point of the anonymous function is not to grant you the ability to post secretly, it's to let you ask "oh shit, I'm starting to have sexual thoughts about other guys - am I gay?" without the fear of having people who know you both on the forums and in real life finding out. Even if it was standard procedure for the mods to check who the anonymous posters were or their account name showed up automatically under the word "anonymous" in their posts it wouldn't really defeat the original purpose of it or be a problem in my mind.

Besides, if you absolutely must have total secrecy and refuse to post on another forum you can take the time to go down to the library where there's a different IP, make a new account, and post from that.

I asked people why we have such a system. no one seems to know why.

We should just get rid of the system. It's not like we can't tell who the idiots are already.

DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM.

Anon is good for a laugh! that must be the reason it exists!

its fun to start argueing with yourself -- full knowing other members will be baffled by it!

Where there is the option to post as anonymous?  It's because some people on LW know each other in real life, and when they are curious about strange bumps on their pen0r or they want to learn about drugs they may not their friends on LW to know.  Also, people care about their internet ego often, so this is also applicable to online friends and not just in real life friends.

Seems pretty straight forward for me.

And this cannot be accomplished though secondary accounts?

Not when the system promotes idiocy.

Then everyone would get second accounts that are only used once or twice. That sort of promotes idiocy in itself, unless you're willing to pay for the server that hosts all the different account information.

It's easier to check a box when you are posting instead of making an entirely new account.

Just because the system can be abused doesn't mean it's not useful.
