I was just wonderring the other day, does gravity exists without matter? For instance, if we obliterate all land and all other substance within earth completely except for gravity, whats going to happen with this force? Would it still exist or would it just suddenly vanish? After a while, this question lead me to the theory of formation of blackholes, since the purpose of gravitation is just suction built on the foundation of land and since my perceptions of blackholes is suction without land, I believed this is how blackholes are formed. I never taken any science courses, so I wouldn't know, but if any of you do take science courses, is my assumption correct?

yes..?

K, lemme just lift my hand to pick up my mouse.
I'll let go of it now, just a sec

If gravity exists as the attraction between matter (i.e. massive objects have lots of gravity) and there's no matter, then there won't be any gravity.

Gravity is a force, it would still exist unless you suddenly get rid of the earth's core.

yeah, i just dropped my pen and since it fell straight down instead of floating away i'm gonna say that gravity exists.

No. Gravity would not exist, because you need mass in order for something to pull towards another. Say i had an apple, and a pea. The pea would have less gravational pull then the apple, because of less mass. No mass=no gravity.

Well, thats what i think anyways.

Oh, and gravity isnt a substance in the first place.

Blackholes are formed from very large suns dieing and imploding on themselves.  They're called blackholes because their core has so much gravity it sucks in light.  Gravity wouldn't really exist if there was no matter, where would it take you to?  Maybe make you go around in circles or something?  Well, anyways, this is coming from a 15 year old that hasn't attempted the intellectual test yet.  :p

not the question asked in the original post...while i don't know the answer, everyone knows gravity exists!

Read Scott Adam's thought experiment "God's Debris". It has an interesting view on things such as gravity.

-- Posted by Northstar at 8:04 pm on Dec. 8, 2006

No, gravity does not exist in what I understand.
Just an urban myth.

I was going to discredit this post for the same reason as I did the other, but there is an evidence in this post that without matter gravity is not present. cowgirl4christ states that her pen does not float away. However, the original post has come across an interesting idea...perhaps when matter collapses (as happens in the death of a supergiant)gravity remains present, as it cannot be passed to other matter.

not really, just that the gravity might not be able to be projected across space without matter, like sound is not able to be passed through space

Sound is an energy...

Uhm, you can't just have GRAVITY like.. sitting there.

-- Posted by frenchnerd7 at 8:41 pm on Dec. 8, 2006

its an analogy...other energy types go across space without matter. Forces other than gravity seem to exist in space also without matter.

Well electromagnetic waves- light, radio can transverse vacuous space so why do you think gravity can not?

-- Posted by frenchnerd7 at 9:14 pm on Dec. 8, 2006

because the behaviour of gravity seems to be dependent upon matter and vice versa

Gravity is a force, without the Earth's matter, there would be no force, therefore no gravity.

There would be gravity even if the earth didn't exist.  Gravity permeates the entire universe.  Even the gravity of distant stars is felt here on earth- although infinitesimally.   The moon’s gravity however has a significant effect- actually pulling on the ocean’s waters to create tides.

If there was no natural mass in any object in the universe there may stand a chance of not being gravity, but then nobody or nothing will say if It can or can't.  Thus no existence.
