OK computer geeks, I need help.  I went to a website and got a notice from my FF browser that I needed a plug-in to use the site.  So I clicked ok. Well this began downloading RealPlayer 10.5. Well near the end of the installation I get a error box that says “Installation can not be completed because an administrator account is required”.  I canceled the install and reboot to my administrator account.  Then I try installing again- but now I get this message: “Set-up decompression failed, possible download error.  Please download this file again or contact your system administrator”.

Well I’ve downloaded the file three times- same problem.  Nor can I deleted the program because its not listed in the add/remove program index. And my old RP won't work now either so I have no Realplayer at all.   Rebooting the computer hasn’t helped. So what can I do to fix this short of a system restore which I don’t want to do because it would mess up some other things.

Call the number in the back of your pc?

It's out of warranty- they aren't going to help.
And they would just tell me to use the restore disk- that's their stock answer to everything.

Where are all the computer geeks?
Why isn't anyone helping me with my problem??

I have noooooo idea if this will help, but you could clear out your internet cache. The installer was probably downloaded to there and is now just an incomplete file. Then download on the administrator account, but like I said, no idea if that will have any effect on it.

I tried this- I even tried downloading it with IE and that wouldn't work either.

Have you tried completely removing RP from your system? I'm not big on software problems, but that's what I'd start with.

Hi Zena,

Have you tried going to realplayer.com and downloading it straight from there?

As I explained in my first post RP does not show in the program add/remove index now.  The new one seems to have destroyed the old one without replacing it.

Hi Zena,

You might try this:

Uninstall

I haven't used it, but it has good reviews and it's free.

Is it possible to do a system restore to before you first tried installing it?

This would remove some programs and updates that I don't want to lose.

You would lose everything that you've done since the last system save, whenever that was........ if you start the restore it should tell you the date of the last save.
