so, has anyone here ever snuck a pet into dorms? Or gotten permission to have them? I have 2 pet rats, they are currently living at my parents house, but I want to bring them to college with me next year. I've been living in freshman housing this year, where the RAs and people are around frequently, but next year I am thinking of living in the upperclassman housing [if not off campus] which is a lot more secluded and from what I've heard RAs don't go inside... so yeah. has anyone gotten away with sneaking a pet inside? My rats are quiet, clean, and stay in their cage. I'm planning on living with friends, and they are fine with the idea of me having my pets. I just am worried what the consequences would be if I were caught with them in my home... so, any experiences? advice? thank you!!

I'm sure you can. My boyfriend lives on university housing, keeps pet snakes and a cat. No one ever looks in.

animals do NOT deserve to live in damn cages.they would be better off dead.thats not how a animal is suppose to live.its cruel.

so lets all let our animals roam free and take over the streets!
kick your dogs and cats out of your houses! it's cruel to let them sit by the nice warm fire and give them food! :D
i think i will go out now and kick my horse out of his field, take off his rug and let him go

they have a huge cage [3 stories, and very wide]. There's 2 of them so they have constant companionship. they have the safest kind of bedding in their cage, are given all sorts of treats that supplement their diets, and they have plenty of toys as well as indoor shelters in their cage. Also, they get taken out of their cage and played with quite a bit. Sure, it's not a really natural habitat, but they were bred as pets, and I am trying to give them the most pleasant habitat as possible. I think it is humane, they are healthy and seem happy. They are very friendly little creatures! :)

[and I pretty much do live in a cage, my room is like a box. My rats have more space to move around in in their cage then I do in my room!]

and thanks Gin, that's good to know! :)

alot of people freak out when you mention the word "rat".i have cats as pets and my asshole rude bitch low life next door neighbor said im strange cause i have 7 cats.i told her to mind her own damn business.im a animal activist & i rescued 4 of my cats from human abuse.

Yeah, a lot of my friends don't like rats either.. though, a lot of them have changed their minds after meeting mine! Rats just have such negative stereotypes surrounding them, it's sad. They are really great animals. I'm lucky to have met friends here at college who would want to move in with me and also love rats, so they wouldn't mind the rats here at all! If anyone on campus had a problem with my rats.. well, they just could not come over to my place, and I wouldn't care.

7 cats, that's very cool! And good for you for rescuing some. I'm not an active animal activist, but I'm a strict vegetarian working on transitioning into veganism. I would love to be involved with more animal rights activities, I'm volunteering at a vegetarian event in my area in a few weeks, but aside from that, I guess I'm not doing a lot of community activism. But, I'm definitely all for animal rights.

I just don't think it's wrong to have animals in cages, as long as they are well cared for.

The idea of keeping animals as pets is kind of weird, but now so many animals were bred for that reason, they couldn't really survive in the wild if they were just let free. I don't see any harm in keeping pets or caged animals, but they do need to be cared for and I try to care for my animals as best as I possibly can.

That's very, very unusual.  I have a friend who got kicked out of her university housing because she had two pet rats there.  I seriously wouldn't recommend taking the chance.

xD My neighbours think I'm strange because I have a pet fennec fox. And 2 cats and 2 dogs, and a few horses.
But what do they know (:

Probably not. The only reason he can get away with it is because he's in individual apartment housing at the univ, not dorms.

wait.. so when she was caught, what happened to her rats? If I took the chance, then got kicked out, w/e. I could find an apartment off campus. But I would not want to risk the chance of having my pets taken from me. Did that happen, or was she able to keep her pets and move out?

and the upperclassmen housing I'm thinking of moving into are those individual apartments on my campus!

She had to find a place for the rats while she was in the midst of moving out.

I would look into it if I were you.  See what the consequences are if you were caught with them.  I'm thinking in my dorm, you could be fined like $150 and have them confiscated.

I have a pet frog and the main reason why I got it is because I argued with the RAs and RD about whether or not if a frog should be banned considering frogs have to have water to survive (do not dare get a frog and a toad mized up).  So I got an african albino frog which is about an inch and a half long and lives in a 10 gallon fish tank with a goldfish.  Since I know the RAs and RD rather well (thanks to the fact that the RD is my advisor and for joining Hall Council to get to know them), I was able to get away with it with no problems whatsoever.

What I'm saying is that you should try to get into some connections with some RAs.  Many people don't look at them as normal people in the dorms, but believe it or not, many are really awesome people.

Rats may be rather hard to keep in the dorms.  Some consequences could include; them escaping, your neighbor finding out and reporting you, someone that hates you reports you, some surprise inspection takes place (my school does health inspections), etc.

There are some kids in my hall that have a "contraband" hampster. And apparently there is a kid in my friend's hall who had a single and kept her cat in there with her.

So, if you just make sure your roommate is cool with it and keep it hidden during room inspections, it's not a big deal. I almost got a lizard but I'm going to be abroad junior year and I don't want to have to find a place for it to live when I'm gone. I'm hopefully getting a puppy senior year when I live off campus.

over thanksgiving my roomate brought her dog back to school and we didn't get caught wtih him until almost christmas and then he had to leave :( but we live in apartment style housing so it is a little easier than tradional dorm rooms

I had a pet rat for a few months, then my RA caught me with it and made me get rid of it (I gave it to my boyfriend who lived off campus, so I still saw it a bunch, then his roommate "accidentally" left the cage open and it ran away).

I've seen people with pet bunnies, and one person with a pet cat (they had a single room that was meant for two people, but his roommate never moved in in the beginning of the year so he had the loft all to himself).

When I was an RA, I would let people bring dogs in for the day, even though I wasn't supposed to. I was very lax with all the rules though, so it really just does depend if you get lucky or not. I wouldn't take the risk if you would get kicked out, but for most smallish pets they let you stay living in the dorms if you get rid of it and don't get in trouble for it again.

my friend has turtles and no one cares

It is good to keep pets with you and feed them.It depends on the  rules ans laws to keep the pets in the room,If you are allowed then there is no harm in keeping pets with you where you live otherwise it would be hard to keep them.

Dont do it, 80% of schools dont allow you to have pets because irresponsible students neglect them and shit and too many problems if majority of students bring in their cats and dogs n mooses etccc so yeah just dont take the chance, maybe they will allow a small fish bowl... lol
