I'm an RA for the upcoming school year, and I'm trying to come up with some interesting activities and events to do at the dorms... any suggestions? -

One time I bought all these foam balls, colored pipe cleaners, googly eyes, glue, sparkles, etc. etc. I just stuck them in the lounge and people just sat there making weird toys and stuff (I called them "study buddies", because it was around finals time). It turned out really well.

Ok, I used this site for when I was president of my hall council. It's a great resource and gives you lots of ideas. http://www.residentassistant.com/

Are you an RA in a coed or all female hall? because if all your residents are female you can do more craft/ scrapbooking type activities . Ones that i know went over well were the seasonal ones where the girls made their own door decorations. We found that the door decorations are more likely to stay up if its something that the residents put efforts into. One of my own ideas that went over well with my male residents was a "Ramon Noodle Cook off" where the residents to create recipe that "kicked roman noodles up a notch" where the only rules where they had to be cooked on dorm rule approved equipment ( the school i was at didn't allow gorge Normans or toaster ovens) oh yea the main ingredient had to be Raman noodles . and the the residents were judges of the "cook off" and the winners were judged on ,Taste, appearance, Originality, and budget (after all we are all broke ass college students). It was alot of fun and even went over well with my male residents. i wish you the best of luck on this up coming school year .

Another good activity that a friend of mine did was showing her residents how to cook just about anything in the microwave. It really worked out for her and the residents, and it even became a quarterly thing to do for her. The university also liked the idea so much theygave her grant money so she is able to buy the food for the program as well.

I was an RA my junior year. The best way to get people to show up to things was food. We had a small budget so this was tough sometimes...I would either make cookies or just put together a social night where we would all order pizza and everyone chipped in a little. One of the biggest successes I had was a floor decorating contest with the other RA's- we promised the kids on our floor a pizza party or something else if that floor won for best Halloween decorations. It was a good way for people to get to know each other too!
