THE ANONYMOUS FEATURE
The anonymous feature is intended to allow members to post potentially sensitive issues in the forums openly without fear of them being discovered by friends/family/real-life acquaintances, allowing members to enjoy more support than would otherwise have been possible.

Guidelines for using the anonymous feature

  • Use only when necessary - if there is no reason to post anonymously, please post under your username
  • Do not use the anonymous feature to lie, troll, spam, perjure or harass other members, or in any other way that is malicious as this will constitute abuse of the anonymous feature. Respect the spirit in which the feature was created
  • Abuse of the anonymous feature will be deemed an offense.

    Moderating the anonymous feature
We pledge that we will never reveal the identity of anonymous posters.

Please note that because people/trolls unfortunately do abuse the anonymous feature, moderators will sometimes have to check anonymous posters - this is necessary for us to do our job (catching trolls, getting rid of spam, etc.). If you want more complete anonymity from all of LW, then use your secondary accounts, which are allowed specifically for this reason.

    The Times They Are A-Changin'
It should be stressed that before this announcement, policy regarding the anonymous feature was unclear. However, from hereon in, the mod team will be viewing abuse of the anonymous feature somewhat disdainfully. The current status quo, whereby the feature is abused so much that genuine users get assumed to be trolls on a balance of probabilities by other users is prevents people from getting the help for which the feature was set up is completely unacceptable and has to change.

    Awesomeness,

    Da Modz0rs

Finally!! I was waiting for someone to make one of these.

Why do people waste the anonymous features like that though.. why are you anonymous for making a post about your left toe that hurts?

    Thanks for doing this.

    yay

-- Posted by Khadgar at 3:23 pm on Aug. 29, 2007

Hooray! I like this statement of policy. The internet IS anonymity, anyway. Who cares if a mod viewed your shit?

    Amen

    Good idea. keep it up.

-- Posted by Spice at 3:24 pm on Aug. 29, 2007

    Thank God for that.

No silly anon posts. If someone goes:

    "yeah, I like that"

just for "Do you like popcorn?" or something.

    Is that considered abuse?

-- Posted by mightyboosher at 3:26 pm on Aug. 29, 2007

    Yes!
Anon posts get really annoying for stupid questions, and members are assumed to be trolls, which is annoying.

-- Posted by erolimo at 3:27 pm on Aug. 29, 2007

Thank you so much for the information. Some members really don't know how to use it.

    Thank you SO much. Seriously.

It's considered misuse, if not abuse.
So yeah - we'd trash it and suggest that the user to post unanonymously. Which we will do as of now.

Thus our only option is to trash it and instruct the user to post anonymously. Which we will do as of now.

You mean under their user =p

In theory, the mods will never tell who the psoter is. But I know for a fact, that this si not always the case.

    Hooray.

The last instance I was aware of, the mod was demoted.

Meh. Sometimes they tell, but only when it isn't actually a personal issue. Like I think someone told during Empire, but obviously it was misuse the the feature in the first place... I don't really care, as this is the internet.

    hooray!

Is this a mod team consensus or something you have unilaterally posted without discussion? And can you list the criteria for when a mod will likely check the identity of an anonymous poster?

    1) All 8 mods that saw it unanimously approved this announcement. As did David who expressly said that this summed up both the purpose and mechanics of the feature.
    2) No. Not relevant.

You are trying to be difficult because this doesn't conform to your ideal of the feature, even though that happens to be out of line with most of LW/the mods/David.

Why is it being difficult to want to be informed?

The request for information was very very very pointed. Unless I misread it. Anyhow - enough down this line of conversation unless you have something to add, otherwise the topic'll drift...
    :)

I wholeheartedly approve of this announcement.

You're being very very very defensive about a LiveWire policy. As a mod you should be happy to explain to members any points they may have concerns about.

Only because I know exactly your stance from previous topics and this is 110% officialising something you don't like/refused to accept what I was saying on

    :p

So because you don't like what you think my stand on the policy is, you refuse to explain certain parts of it to me? I'm not sure I understand that attitude..
