Okay, so I know I could e-mail HP support, or wade through the tons of partially helpful computer forums, but I thought I'd give a crack at livewire first, considering I know there have got to be some people in the know here. Okay, so somehow (don't ask me how, I NEVER get viruses) I suddenly got this virus (don't know what it's called, I can't keep my computer on long enough to find out) after not using my laptop for two months.
I can turn my computer on, but when it gets to the desktop it shuts itself down after about 20-30 sec. I can only get stuff off of it (docs etc) when in safemode. I tried to use my restore CDs, but those wont work (my computer is not recognizing my CD drive, apparently) and I can't do it the old-fashioned way (it's decided to ignore my C: drive as well .. but it recognizes the floppy) Someone .. HELP ME!! All I really want to know is if anyone has experienced this or knows what may be wrong .. Its driving me NUTS..

Looks like a reformat is in order for you.

Have you tried booting to safemode? Anyway. http://www.gotechforums.com/forums/cat.cgi?action=technical

The problem is that I CAN'T restore it because my computer wont recognize my cd drive (so the cd wont start up) and I cant reformat it by format c:/ blahblah because it can't find C drive (though in safemode I can access the Cdrive fine. OS Windows ME I have booted in safemode to get all the docs and stuff that I need (because it will shut itself down in normal mode). I'm looking at the links now.

that, sir, is the sasser virus. I caught it too and had to reformat my hard drive because you can't make a boot disk in the NTFS format :(

Hmmm. If it is sasser, read though this first, before reformatting. EDIT: If you already have your docs, it might just be easier to reformat. If your feeling brave, try linux. (Edited by squirellplayingtag at 4:38 pm on Aug. 12, 2004)

Are they all deleted/repaired?

Nope - I have to go (I guess) and find a removal thing for each individual virus or something, but I haven't had the time to sit down and do that :( <>(Edited by Toxic Hauteur at 6:01 pm on Aug. 14, 2004)
