It was a clear signal, but not obvious enough that everyone down the hall knew it was their "sign". Although, one afternoon I came back to the room with my boyfriend and the phone book was there, so we waited. And waited, and waited... Then his roommate comes home and we ask "WTF?!" when he walks up the door. It turns out that someone had actually borrowed the phone book and returned it when no one was home. I would just say if your roommates are a little on the... dull side, that perhaps you should find a friend who will lend their room to you or grab a cheapo hotel room.
