Sometimes you'll get 2 at once, other times you won't get them for days. The welcome message? Mine just says something like 'Hi, I'm Fern and I'm your support leader. Welcome to LW and message me if you need anything'. Novices are randomly assigned to you while you are online. What you put in your custom welcome message is totally up to you, and many Sls don't even do anything with it, although it would be suggested that you do, just to make it more personalized. Remember there is already quite a long message that outlines the guidelines, terms of use, frequently asked questions and a bunch of other things.
