Just a random thought. Wondered how many people run the same operating systems that I run. Currently I'm running in Windows XP Pro (With SP1 installed) I also have a dual-boot of Windows .NET Enterprise Server 2003. (It isn't officially released yet, it's in extreme testing and development) So what operating system are YOU using? And just to make this a good topic.. What OS do you prefer and/or what OS would you like to install?

I started on Windows 3.1, then upgraded to Windows 95, then to 98, then 98 SE. At that point our new computer was Win ME and I got the old computer where I started to experiment with Linux. I started with a Caldera Distribution, where I moved on to debian. Debian is hellishly out of date, even on the unstable tree so I said skrew it and tried out Red Hat. Red hat is somewhat nice, simple install and so on but the RPMS are so incredibly constrictive and compiling your own stuff is annoying. I moved on from that and toyed a little with FreeBSD but eventually settled on Slackware. I love slackware, so nice. Its up to date, easy to compile stuff on, and their packages are nice too. Its a little harder for the beginning user, but I find it quite liberating compared to other package based distributions. As far as windows is concerned I loaded Win2k so I could play some games, and whoever said that windows was easier to install than Linux, hasn't installed windows from a clean boot. I must have restarted my computer like 10 times when installing it, oh well.

i started at Mac OS 6.0.7 ona Mac Classic, slowly upgraded and now i'm running 9.1 on a ruby red iMac. I'd be at 9.2 or even MacOSX, but when i upgrade that far it brings up conflicts for the games i run, so i stick it at 9.1

I really like the .NET Server OS. It's kind of like 2k, except with all the features of XP Pro, plus so much added stability. In my opinion, and the opinions of a lot of others.. It wipes the floor with Linux. It's fast, stable and integrated, where Liinux isn't integrated. So I think I'll stick with this one-of-a-kind M$ OS. :)

I started on Win95, then 98, then got Windows ME on my desktop, and it's horrible, it's EVIL! I HATE IT! it crashes madly. And now I have XP on my desktop... which is generally stable, except when something crashes, 75% the time I might as well hard boot it right there. I think Win2000 pro would be a good mix between 98 and xp. I like the mac interface, I used it for a while at a job place. It wasn't bad, took some getting used to though. Ironically I have a dual boot.... Windows XP or Windows XP. lol, and there isn't two on my system, but it thinks there is for some reason... it's very retarded. It was formatted before, loading must been a glitch... But soon I am disowning this old hunk of junk for the ultimate graphics machine ::sinister laugh:: My only hint is I will have 3gbs of ram... Imagine the rest... Mwuhahahaha! um... yes. and such. ^_^

Ok, way weird, it said there were like 14 replies on this earlier.... oh wel Linux ownz everything. I'm sorry, it just does. I have never been impressed with anything microsoft has ever made (except windows 3.1, that one never ever crashed, ever). Windows has bloat and unnecessary features that'll waste space and memory with stuff you don't need/want, not to mention every time a new windows release comes out you need a new computer to run it! The only thing windows has over Linux nowadays is games, and even there they're starting to lose with great games such as Neverwinter Nights, Unreal Tournament, Army Operations, all being ported over to linux and in some cases, running way better. Granted there are some parts of linux that need work (better ACPI support, work on the DRI, etc) but it's coming together. Anyway, back to the question at hand, I'm running Gentoo Linux on my laptop and Windows 2000 Pro on my desktop for my games (Counterstrike, Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3). I anticipate that I won't be using my desktop for any real work until I take my GUI class which unfortunately needs windows :-(. Heh, I just realized how old this topic is....

yeah thats why you dont install features you dont need. and Im running xp on a machine that was designed for 98 me. Therefor you dont always need a new pc. your pretty much right on the rest
