After getting broardband and a static ip (so i could host a website) i set up a linux server 2 run apache blah blah.. all workin fine. what do i need 2 make it able for people 2 send messages to root@my.ip.address.here, is this even possible? many thanks.

Yes it is possible, when u set up linux tell it u want it to install mail server etc........ so I couldnt be of much more help I have noticed these settings but i cant remeber where :p

could u name a mail (recieve capeable) server so i can go find the rpm hehehe... sendmail is only for sending rite???

Get a windows emulator such as Wine then a windows mail program.

Yes, but its linux so we should use a linux mailer program... i will ask a mate for u

no...mail does not work to IPs in the string....it sux but what u gunna do? i can give you a subdomain of mine or go to godaddy.com....cheapest domains out there...booya!
