Are less intelligent people more likely to listen to mainstream music? Are more intelligent people more likely to develop an underground or broader taste? And...what are your favorite genres and bands?

why would your music taste correlate with that? i know plenty of intelligent people whose music taste is incredibly narrow, there's no way that's true

I don't think so because there are these really smart kids in our class but they listen to stuff like the last unicorn That's like baby music!! 54

i think there may be a link between genre and intelligence, but not a very strong link, i think music taste in enviromental so basically all the kids at one school will listen to similar music and so on, i don;t think it's linked to intelligence

I agree with that. I don't think that as a general rule smart people listen to underground music. But I've never met a stupid person who listens to shoegaze or IDM or math rock. I think it's just that smarter people are more likely to experiment with different genres, thereby discovering a wider and more unique taste for themselves.

Exactly.

In my experience the most intelligent people listen to the broadest spectrum of music from Harry Nielson to Kanye West. Okay well I won't go so far as Kanye West, but you get the point.

It may be an indicator of your intelligence type, sure. I hate music snobs though.

I think it can say a lot about a person, and it can certainly have a correlation, but correlation =/= causation. In my experience, many people that I would deem... less than intelligent listen to mainstream, angry but empty music and will often believe this 'righteousness' makes them seem intelligent, unique and edgy. There's the even STUPIDER ones that seem to listen to and subsequently speak like their "urban" music. These are the same people that dress in tracksuits, fake gold jewellery and yell at "fuckin' hippies" on the street corner (= I don't think your music taste is really linked with intelligence, but that the music you listen to is often dictated by your social group, which IS often indicative of your intelligence.

I don't think music taste correlates with how intelligent you are. As Tubbz said, music taste is more linked to your environment than anything. In my case, I think the reason I like so many different genres of music is that I grew up surrounded by different types of people. My parents listen to Brit rock mainly (Cream, the Beatles, the Who, and so on). My babysitters would listen to KTU and Z100, the dance and hit music stations respectively, so I was exposed to that. I would go on trips and my camp counselors listened to HOT97, the local hip hop/rap/r&b station. I grew to like these genres because it was familiar to me. I got older and started to discover music on my own. As I grow older, my music taste evolves with my personality. I have music for my different moods and phases. I have a few constant bands, with music so versatile that it fits every mood, but I'm in love with music, so I'll listen to anything so long as I feel changed or inspired by it afterward. [/novel]

I've thought of this before and it seems to me as if smarter people in general enjoy techo, trance, etc over the norm. Everyone is different though of course.

I listen primarily to Techno/Trance, but i like other genres too. I think that smart people look for good music, beyond mainstream because the have the wits to have their own opinions.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Smart people can listen to all kinds of music. But from personal experience, people who listen to electronica, indepepndent rock, and jazz tend to be more intelligent then people who listen to say, pop or modern rap.

the most important question to ask -- is, "why would there be a link" even if a link maybe found, it could be very indirect; for example: Inteligence = good job Good job = monney monney = more cd's more cd's = listen to more music Unless someone can come up with a plausible explanation for why there would be causal conection then it should be treated as merely a meaningless co-relation. like the negative co-relation between the lack of pirates, ninjas and cavemen, and the increasing global warming. ^ its a nonsense co-relation, however, there is a causal relationship between the lack of ninja's and golbal population.
