Some say this crisis is "phony".  Others say it is very real.  What is your take on this?

My personal opinion is there is in fact a crisis.  Social Security is eventually going to be bankrupt if it isn't already.  The baby boom era has so many people retiring, and unemployment is still relatively high.  The tax payers just are not there anymore.

What does this mean?  I believe retirement is at age 65.  I'm 18 years old now.  In 47 years, the SS system will have a few amount of dollars considering.  Not all people will receive these benefits.

So us workers who are giving money towards social security will not get much of that back.  We obviously are not going to get ALL of it back, but considering, we will not get much back.

It is a very interesting topic.  Discuss.  I'm not perfect so if I misunderstood something about this crisis, inform me please.

It is the same thing here with the Canadian Pension Plan. I'm accepted the fact that I'm giving the government money I will never see returned.

I refuse to accept this fact.  I believe that, perhaps, we should have a mass strike across the country.  If everyone that most likely won't see the money the put in ever again form a group and strike, nation-wide, some action would have to be taken.  Unfortunately, the logistics of this are near-impossible.  :/ Guess I'm stuck paying for people I don't even like.

if it isn't already?

social security takes in MASSIVELY more money than it spends.

the fact that we spend it in places we shouldn't still doesn't mean the program is close to bankruptcy.

although the retirement of the baby boomers may push it in to the red, SS taxes are currently $150 billion a year higher than SS payouts.
