This is to everyone that laughs when they see someone in public with Tourette's Syndrome, or is a fan of that Tourette's guy, or whatever.

I understand how the disease can be funny to you. If I didn't have experience with it I'd probably laugh, too. But I'm asking of you to PLEASE, have respect, and try not to.

I am the only person in my family without Tourette's Syndrome, but my father is the only person with Coprolalia (verbal tics). He has an extremely severe case, and countless times has come home and actually starting crying because people have ridiculed him in public, or socially rejected him because of his illness. His entire life he was never accepted, especially in the closed-minded community he grew up in. He has great friends now, but they're hard to find. I'm speaking of someone who has seen the extreme emotional pain this causes people. My parents knew someone who actually had a suicide attempt because he didn't want to live with such an "embarrassing" disease that makes people so dislike him.

Once again, I understand that there IS humor involved in TS. However.... I'm just asking you to try. If you must smile or giggle, that's fine. Hell, *I* do that sometimes -- some of my dad's tics are pretty funny! But don't RIDICULE it, and use it for your entertainment. That's just cruel.

I really want to spread awareness of this somehow as I progress through life. I know I am one person, and I can't make all the difference. But I want to spread the word, and this is an easy way to do it -- posting on a teenage forum with hundreds of daily visitors.

I think that's terrible when people do that.

-- Posted by navygirl08 at 7:03 am on Mar. 22, 2008

I completely agree. I don't laugh at all becasue I know that Im lucky that I dont have a disease like that and the people who do laugh are stupid and ignorant. ITS NOT FUNNY, at all.

My friend has tourrettes. He has oral tics.

-- Posted by xoxo1234 at 7:04 am on Mar. 22, 2008

Thanks to all of you.

-- Posted by Disposition at 7:05 am on Mar. 22, 2008

I agree.

-- Posted by Mazy at 7:06 am on Mar. 22, 2008

I think when people ridicule it, it's because they don't know how to react and it's their problem not the person with tourette's problem.

-- Posted by Northstar at 7:06 am on Mar. 22, 2008

Yes, I admit I sometimes smile...but to ridicule someone for it is just cruel.

I agree. I might find it funny, but I'd keep it to myself. Anyone who does ridicule the person like that is a tool.

Inspired by this topic by any chance? I have no personal experience with Tourette's Syndrome, but it offended me.

People are like that about a whole range of disabilities.

Haha, well I've been thinking of making a topic like this for a while, but that topic reminded me.

I completely agree with you.
I was diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder, and mild depression a few years ago, and I get made fun of for it constantly. Not many people seem to think that it's actually a serious disease, and that it should be treated that way.
I don't brag about it, but I went into the hospital last year, and people did ask questions. So I told them the truth - and got completely shot down for it.

People can be so great sometimes.

I actually have the same issue, although I don't experience such negative reactions when I tell them about my clinical depression as I do with TS. Especially in this day and age, I constantly get called emo.

I never tell anyone... for fear of the same reaction.

I totally agree with you. Nicely said and thanks for adding this topic in the group. I wouldn't of found it otherwise. :)

I have Tourrettes myself. The reality is, whenever there is something different than other people, others will make fun.

-- Posted by carolinababy at 8:31 am on Mar. 22, 2008

i don't have personal experiences but they put this stuff on t.v. and it shows the hardships they have to go through in order to go to like the prom or something like that.

SINCE WHEN YOU DO YOU HAVE TOURRETTES?
WHY DON'T I KNOW THIS?

-- Posted by Just Waiting Here at 9:31 am on Mar. 22, 2008

You know, I had never really known about Tourette's until I went to the doctor and she suggested that maybe that's what I had... but she eliminated the possibility because I don't have any vocal tics...

Instead, I have seem to have motor tics... I don't know what they are, but I have random uncontrollable movements... and while sometimes it can be funny (like when I hit my boyfriend and honestly, it's truly uncontrollable), but other times, it's just embarrassing... people always look at me and say, "are you ok?" or "what's wrong with you?"  Makes me feel conscious about it sometimes... it's good though, it doesn't happen often in public or at work... :).

But it gives me some insight on it... and vocal tics are much more noticeable than one of the smaller tics I might have.  It's just irritating that people don't consider the fact that it's uncontrollable...  it's the world we live in, I guess... people get ridiculed for those things that aren't their fault, or those things that shouldn't even be of importance (such as clothing or wealth).  :(.

Whoah... you need to see a different doctor, because I know a LOT about Tourettes, and I know for a fact that the tics don't have to be motor.

Yeah, I've been told that you don't have to have vocal tics to have tourettes.  I ONLY have the motor tics, but we don't know what it is.  My doctor basically said, "some people get hiccups, so maybe you just get tics".  But recently they've been getting worse... used to be just the neck, now it's my arms, sometimes it's my feet (I was driving on a highway and got one, and pressed the pedal down all the way, lol.  Good thing they only last a few seconds).  And well, I guess I make random sounds sometimes too... lol, can't control those either.  I mean, sometimes it's amusing, but other times, you just hope no one notices -__-'.  Anyway, I dunno what they are, lol.  But I'm going again soon to see another doctor, this time I want answers :).

i kinda agree with you, girl but sorry to say that I'm just deadly afraid of people with Tourette's Syndrome. I'm trying to work on my extreme fear but nothing's working. now i understand why nobody at school likes me kinda

-- Posted by Anticare at 5:49 pm on Mar. 22, 2008

I agree on this. It's one thing find a little humor. Yet when you start ridiculing someone because of something, it went to far.

-- Posted by Tavis at 8:06 pm on Mar. 22, 2008

I am aware that people can't help it, and I don't ridicule it, but I also don't prevent it some of the times. There is one person in our school with it, and it makes me giggle slightly, because he'll be at his locker in the morning, bobbing his head and going in a 3-point circle, taking up most of the hall. It isn't his fault, but I smirk because he causes quite the inconvenience.

-- Posted by PetitOiseau at 8:24 pm on Mar. 22, 2008

I agree. This kid at my school has it and shouts swear words and people laugh at him...it makes me SO mad.

-- Posted by Xeison at 9:50 pm on Mar. 22, 2008

Its very unfortunate that people ridicule others for being different in a way that they do not understand, especially when it is due to an illness. im glad that you decided to take initiative and are trying to spread awareness of the problem so that hopefully people will realize what they are doing and change. Thank you for putting this topic up and trying to make a difference.

It really bugs me when people ridicule and tease others for any reason at all, but especially for "impairments" or "disabilities" for lack of better words.  I did work experience with disabled kids, teens and adults for 6 months and the amount of times people would laugh at them, point, or make snide comments...its enough to make me cry.  Some of these people don't even realsie they are being made fun of, due to their disbabilities...bah, it annoys me...

-- Posted by Space pringle at 12:39 am on Mar. 24, 2008

The "group" i used to hang around at school with, one of us had Tourretes. We used to laugh and joke about it, but i remember some kid took the piss. He got chinned, and it all kicked off.

There is a diffrence between a joke and making a joke.
