ubuntu. but it's all about your needs.. if you're a gamer then ubuntu is obviously a bad choice.. also.. going into the world of linux without any knowledge about it would be a bad idea.

I would go with both.  Dual-boot, no need to chose one.

I personally like Ubuntu better.  It takes a bit of extra config, nothing that can't be figured out from the ubuntu forums though.  And best of all, its free.  

And another thing, LinuxMint is pretty good too.  It's almost identical to Ubuntu, except with a bunch of audio, video, and wireless drivers already installed in it.

linux always if you want basic office maximum productivity. xp for games unless you use wine in linux or a virtual machine in linux. i'm for ubuntu though.
