I've heard that college kids are different from high school kids. But how?

I've had a hard time making friends in high school and my guidance counsellor told me it would be different in college. I forgot to ask...how and why??

She mentioned it's because in college, the people are adults and they don't deal with your parents if there's problems...So??? What about the people who'll just start college like me?? Won't they be the same???

I have a hard time socializing and I'm always being inconsistant with my shyness. So maybe it's not college that would be different. Maybe I need to improve social skills?

Help, anyone?

the reason that they say they are different you realize that people are there because they want to learn and such, unlike highschool kids who don't...

The atmostphere is different and usually by the time you graduate you are ready to move on and hit the next major milestone in your life

People are more mature. And you are with people who share the same interests as you because you're taking the same classes.

Plus it kind of forces you to grow up. Mommy and Daddy aren't there to talk to the mean teacher for you - if you have an issue with a professor, you have to figure it out for yourself. Profs don't take crap or notes from Mom.

There are loads of student groups you can join - groups about specific interests (chemistry, paleontology etc.) and you can always join a frat/sorority.

Plus they weed out the idiots. Mostly.

Well people in college are different because one you can drink in college, you may not be living at home anymore, you are older and possibly more mature and it is a different atmosphere. Some people stay the same tho

You're lucky then. My professors won't do that - you have to talk to them yourself. My parents won't do that either - they're pretty much like "Well, you live in a different province, you're getting married, you can deal with this stuff yourself."

er, well, college students are supposed to be more mature than high school kids, but that's not always the case.

college students are different because that's what they are-students. i don't think people would be stupid enough to waste thousands of dollars to stay at a school and not want to do anything but be a pain. college students generally want to learn, and have fun at the same time. high school kids don't want to learn-they just want to get out of their school (like me). but if you live away at college, theres no mom, dad, or grandma to pressure you, do your laundry, feed you, or fix your car. you're on your own, and people realize that they need to change to accomodate their new challenges.

highschool was basically a popularity contest with cliques.. college is basically the real world where everyone is equal, so people aren't as fast to judge u, or most people dont know u so no one will have biases about u. just be friendly to everyone and u'll easily make friends :)
