I'm shy, to the point where I sometimes find it difficult to look people in the eye, but my self-esteem isn't that bad. I wouldn't say that I completely adored myself, but then again, I don't hate myself like I once did. I'm kind of in the middle. Therefore, how can it be possible for me to be shy? I thought you were shy if you felt really, really, insecure or something.

uhm well if u were once very insecure or unhappy with the way you look then i think it is still possible to be shy because of that.
I would like to think ofmyself as an outgoing person, but i still have this kind of paranoia that people don't like me and that i annoy them, so i kind of unintentionally distance myself from people.

I'm shy but I have plenty self-esteem. Not to the point where I have trouble looking people in the eye (although I don't see how it's a necessity for conversation), but self-confidence =/= extroversion.

Someone who is loud and outspoken could be just as insecure as someone who is shy. The two words don't mean the same thing.

As for why people are shy is like asking why we laugh, it's just natural.

your not really that shy...i've never considered myself to be insecure when i was shy...that's almost depression...just smile when around people..
::D

that sounds like me. I'm a little shy (especially over the phone) and I have very low self-esteem. I suffer from Asperger's Disease and my brother has severe Social Anxiety Disorder...pm me if you like :) and be happy

Most of the time i'm shy, But it's strange. If i meet new people, some of them i can talk to straight away but others it takes me months to start a conversation.

Over the phone i'm awfully shy though, I just laugh. I don't really say anything.

I don't think it's anything to do with low self esteem, i think some people are just less comfortable around people than others.

Outgoing people can be even more insecure than shy ones. We just hide it better. When I'm insecure, I tend to just be more annoying and talkative than usual. Lol.

Yeah, I'm beginning to notice that actually.

That is normal! You are just working your way up to that level where it is easy to look people in the eye. Some people might appear to be "shy" when they are far from it. It is just in their character to be more quiet and reserved. Either way, there is nothing wrong with you. Maybe if you really want to be able to go up to someone and strike up a conversation or be able to look people in the eye....just push yourself to that level...even if you can only do it for a few seconds. It's a start!
