There is a separate sticky for discussion of the Twilight film. Click here to get to it!

As anyone who frequents this forum will know, there have recently been a large amount of topics about the 'Twilight' series by Stephanie Meyer. In the hope of consolidating some of the discussion, I have decided to create a general topic.

Please use this topic to discuss:

  • Whether or not you have read the books and whether or not you're planning to
  • What you thought of the books
  • Your expectations for future books
  • The books in general

Please click here to read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn. Discussion of this chapter should be limited to this topic.

If you have a topic related to the books that would benefit from more in-depth discussion, then please feel free to post your own topic, but we will expect most issues to be contained to this topic and other topics will be locked or deleted.

The Twilight series consists of Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

The plot is centred around Bella Swan, a young woman who falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen.

I've just finished Twilight and I'm waiting for New Moon and Eclipse to arrive These are better than Harry Potter almost

I think Cleolinda on LiveJournal put it best:

The Twilight books are like Twinkies.

Twinkies are not a gourmet dessert and, really, aren't very good for you. If you want to ingest that number of calories and ruin your figure, there are many tastier desserts you could choose, but sometimes, you're just craving the not-so-good fluff of a Twinkie.

Same is true of Twilight. As far as writing and plot go, the books are extremely lacking and, it could be argued, the only real three-dimensional character in the whole series is Jacob Black. But sometimes, you need something that's not-so-good and fluffy...and, in this case, sparkly.

That said, anyone who's going to argue that the Twilight books are great literature should be strapped down and forced to read Jane Austen novels until her eyes fall out.

love twilight.cant wait for the book or movie.i love the harry potter books.and love Jane Austin and most classic books. i don't understand why some people hate twilight but they are entitled to their opinions.

-- Posted by Lewdness at 7:26 pm on May 18, 2008

Haha. I think it's amusing how Twilight needs a sticky. It deserves one though, I was getting really sick of Twilight threads every few posts.

Personally, I can't deal with Twilight myself. I've read up to Eclipse, but not without eye rolling and cringing every few pages or paragraphs.

I think the worst thing about Twilight is the MASSIVE fanbase it has. I can understand the Harry Potter fanbase, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, hell even Star Trek... but Twilight?

Someone posted above comparing Twilight to a twinkie and I think that has some truth in it. However, I don't think that explains the mass love of Twilight.

Honestly, I think the popularity of this book is such a tragic commentary on our times. Bad character development, cheesy dialogue, horrid writing... is that really the sort of "literature" that appeals to people now? Really.

-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 4:50 am on May 19, 2008

The mass love, I think, comes partly from the fact that it's total wish fulfillment (teenage girl uprooted from her old home where she was a little fish in a big pond to this new home where suddenly, she's the most beautiful girl in school, every boy wants to date her, and she's the only one beautiful and perfect enough for the Adonis-like Edward Cullen...who also happens to be a sexy vampire). Though there are always exceptions, most teenage girls would find that to be a dream come true.

Everyone wants to be more special than they are, and books like Harry Potter and Twilight allow people to live that special life vicariously through their heroes. Twilight just does it a bit more fluffily and poorly-written-ly than Harry Potter.

How amazingly true. Some books are like twinkies, or other yummy bad for you hostess delights. the twiglight series def. falls in that category.

I have just read Twighlight and am currently reading New Moon.  I actually think that so far, the books seem to be very well-written.  They are descriptive and clear and the plot is very well done.  Numerous events that happened surprised me and I never would have expected things to turn out the way they did.  If the books are so averagely written, why are they best-sellers?  And why are millions of teens infatuated by them?

Because millions of teens don't care about good writing. They care about imagining that they're the one in Bella's shoes, with everyone in the world in love with them, including nauseatingly perfect vampires.

i dedicated the last week of my life to these books and even though id rather alittle more closure at the end of the third book. They are still amazing my favorite was the 1st

    1. Why did you edit out the bulk of my post?

    2. Even if you're not a great reader, Jane Austen is still superior in quality to Twilight, on a purely objective level.

were not impressed by your attempt of literary superiority, and Stephanie Meyer has sold millions of books more than "Jane Austen", so it must have some literary value, its hard to rate books, and movies, and all other sources of media, because each of those things is objective and individual to each and every person  watching.

AKA another persons trash is another persons treasure.

its no use arguing this because in the end, you will both be right, and wrong, and just generally be pissed at each other..

    and thats not accomplishing anything

-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 3:35 pm on May 22, 2008

    Again:

[Stephanie Meyer has sold millions of books] because millions of teens don't care about good writing. They care about imagining that they're the one in Bella's shoes, with everyone in the world in love with them, including nauseatingly perfect vampires.

How many books sell is not an indicator of good writing. In this day and age, it tends to be an indicator of pretty poor writing, if you've ever read Harry Potter or any of Dan Brown's catastrophes.

Also, I'd like to know where you get your information that Twilight and its relatives have sold more copies than Jane Austen's novels, considering that Jane Austen (a) was more prolific than Ms. Meyer; (b) has had her novels around for 250 years more than Ms. Meyer; and (c) will be around long after Ms. Meyer has ceased to be a popular fad?

I just picked up my pre-ordered copy of the Special edition of Eclipse that has the first chapter of Breaking Dawn. The first chapter is mostly all wedding plans.

I was surprised there was nothing surprising in it. It's still really good. Just somewhat blah.

    -- Posted by kendall716 at 12:34 pm on May 31, 2008

I disagree with people who don't like her writing style. Since when has their been an author of a teen series that wrote books like Jane Austen writes? Let's face it. The majority of teenage readers want simple books that they can really submerge themself in. Twilight is very well written for teens.

If you want to review some of Stephenie's adult work I reccomend you purchase The Host. I'm a huge book worm and have read every Jane Austen, Lolita, Les miserables - the list goes on... anyhow; The Host is an amazing novel. Very well written and you wouldn't know it was the same author of twilight.

-- Posted by malignant melanoma at 1:05 pm on May 31, 2008

The first book in the series was ok. The second was eh. I didn't finish the third.

Like it being from Edward's point of view is going to make any guy more inclined to read it? I think that if a guy wants to read it he should. So what if it has a mostly female readership if it seems appealing go ahead. I don't think books need to be stereotyped as either male or female. Granted, these books aren't exactly what I think the average male would want to read.

-- Posted by Sammygirl at 10:35 am on June 7, 2008

I've read the books and I found them alright, I'm used to reading more adult novels and these books don't seem to have the depth that I like. People also have compared them to the Harry Potter novels and I don't see any comparison what so ever to me the harry potter books were something that can never be repeated.
