BlackICE is hooked directly to the task manager and every time a new process or a change in a process happens, it asks you if it should close or continue. So nothing can start without your permission. Before I was wishing to dish out money for onecare, I was on windows firewall and AVG Free Edition. A simple antivirus works for everyday joes, and if your behind a router/network, windows firewall will get the job done.
