I have windows vista home premium and it has never given me a problem until today.  About an hour ago it just started acting up.  I turned it on, was talking to people online and all of a sudden Pidgin was not responding. Then firefox was not responding. I hit ctrl alt del to see if maybe i was at 100% cpu or something but when i clicked to open the task manager, it just took me back to my unresponsive desktop.  i waited a bit and nothing happened.  i tried ctrl alt del again but nothing happened.  I tried hitting the power button to turn it off but it wouldn't work.  I finally had to take my battery out.  I turned my computer back on and tried to look up what could have caused the problem but my computer just did the same thing again.  The third time it happened my screen turned black (or dark blue? but not the blue screen of death) i held down the power button for a while and it eventually turned off.  i have it in safe mode now and so far so good.  i tried to look up what the problem could be but the navigation of the "help and support" thing is so confusing.  I never had a problem with xp.  it would take you though a trouble shooting guide.  i don't see any in vista.

anyone know what the problem could be? or know of somewhere i could go to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it?

Download the Windows Live One Care free trial and do a full tune up.

vista sucks...i have it...

do you have the antivirus crap "spy sweeper"?

i have that, and it runs these retarded "check ups" and stuff randomly, and freezes EVERYTHING up for anywhere between 1 min or once in a while like 10.

I just thought I'd let you guys know that I took my laptop into geek squad.  They ran a quick diagnostics check while I was there and said that I had no viruses or anything.  I left it with them so they could do a full diagnostics test and everything.  A few days later I got it back and they told me that my hard drive was going bad.  Since I got it my dad bought the 3 year warranty, the diagnostics tests were free and they not only replaced my hard drive for free but they put in a larger hard drive and gave me Microsoft Office for free.

I thought I'd post this just in case in the future someone has a similar problem.  So yeah, if your laptop is freezing up like that unless in safe mode, and you do everything you can to troubleshoot it but you still get no answers, it is very possible that you have a faulty hard drive so take it in and get that checked out!
