Blender is free. There's another one that's also free, but I forgot the name of it.

i think a program comes with gimp, MAYBE, that would let you do some simple animating but that doesnt sound like what you want to do

Well, there's Macromedia Flash, where you can do things like that. But it isn't exactly the easiest thing to learn right off the bat- you have to get used to it and play around with it for awhile.

Found this program called K-3D but it's more for rendering than actual moving. But here's the link anyway-- http://www.k-3d.org

Tales Animator is more for kids to use but it is easy to use. You can create AVI files and even gif animated stuff.
