Don't ask Livewire. I bet half the people are saying Columbia because it's an Ivy League and don't realize that Cornell is also an Ivy League.
Go to their websites and check out their engineering program on your own. Call the colleges and ask for information including obviously how difficult it is to get in, job placement, ask for a list of where their engineering students get jobs, and what other college programs theirs can be compared to. Also, ask if it is possible to shadow an engineering student for a day or two.

cornell is the lowest ranked ivy though

Doesn't mean it doesn't have a better engineering program. A lot of the best engineering programs aren't even in the Ivies.

And, yes, Cornell is the largest Ivy League school.

My cousin went to Cornell - not for engineering, so I can't really help with that specifically, but she loved the University itself. I do know that Columbia's engineering program is very good, one of my teachers was going for her masters at Columbia this past year. I don't know much about Cornell's program, though.

I'm pretty sure Cornell has a far better engineering program.

Yes, it is. lol

Columbia... Cornell suck. It's cold and it's in the middle of no where.

Plus Columbia have great dining hall food:)

Sure, Cornell may have a better program and stuff, but Columbia aren't far off. The question is whether you want to live 4 years in a cold tundra or live in NYC where there's a ton of stuff to do:)

That is definitely true. While Columbia is regarded better overall, Cornell engineering is far superior. Columbia's strengths lie in law and business.

MIT >Columbia >Cornell

They're both really fucking good! But go to CollegeConfidential.com forums for this. Most people on LW are not at all knowledgeable about higher education and will misinform you.

People here really like to spout off incorrect nonsense. So, for clarity's sake, some facts:

* Cornell is indeed an Ivy League. However, this is just an old sports conference, and is not something that should therefore matter.

* The "lowest ranked" Ivy is not Cornell, but Brown. And it is, wait for it, still ranked #14. Cornell is #12, and Columbia is tied for #9. So guess what? All of them are excellent schools with no serious quality distinction on the whole.

* As far as engineering goes, Cornell is much better. It is established fact. This is reflected by the significant different in PA scores and overall rank. Cornell is ranked #10 with a PA of 4.2, compared to the #28 Columbia, whose PA is a mere 3.6.

* As for the food comment, it is Cornell that is known for excellence here, not Columbia. It is consistantly in the top 5 nationwide. Columbia is not among the top 20 (which is how far the published rankings extend).

Of course, there are other factors to consider when choosing between the two schools. Each has many good things about them, and many bad things. But that requires you doing some of your own research.

i believe that cornell is much better than columbia in terms of engineering. i got into ivies myself wanting to do an engineering program and chose to go to the west coast.

however, you should also look at schools from other perspective, such as student life and location.

Cornell's engineering program is all I've heard about from engineering friends.

It is up to you though, research them both and find out which is the better fit for you!

Cornell is far from the cold tundra of upstate, if you want to see cold tundra, visit me. :P
