If it's BPD it's something you'll be able to help him with, schizophrenia is much more serious. But imaginary friends at his age could mean abuse in his early childhood. Whether physical, emotional, or sexual. The creation of the imaginary friend is the childs way of filling a void or coping with the traumatic experience. This is usually called Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and can usually be treated with Zoloft or Prozac.
