They tend to be like "Yo man" or "Dude".....whether they know the person well or not.  Is this an unwritten rule or respect or something? I guess you just pick it up depending on the environment you live and are involved it. I always say it, man and dude most frequently and a few other inside joke type things to close friends. It's just the current expression among a certain segment of our society. Like all such things, these expressions come and go.
