September 2002 an Asteroid came close to the earth and could be seen from Japan. THAT!! could have taken the world out....but didn't. The thing is when the world is ready to end it just will and we will go as well. The world will end due to 1. The earth stop spinning (this could happen when the south pole becomes the north pole (the world turns upside down electromagnetically speaking)) 2. An Asteroid hits it. 3. The sun expands into a 'RED GIANT' 4. Due to some other reason. Point is life is too short to even think about that. When its going to happen then it will just happen and unfortuantely humanity an all living organisms will die with the planet and there isn't anything we could do except take over another planet. There may not be an apocolyptic massive destruction on a given date. But I've just finished writing to my member of provincial parliament and my Premier (roughly equivalent to the US State legislatures) asking their support for a low speed electric car manufacturer. That of course will not save the world alone. But it's one of many, many things we must adjust in the way we live and consume our resources. One thing that spurred me to write was also the mention on the news this morning that the US Congress just heard from the scientist (I didn't catch his name) who first warned them 20 years ago, of global climate change. He feels that the world is at it's pivotal point pretty much NOW. In a year or two, he says, there will be forces at work in the climate- a "tipping point" - where, nomatter what we do after that point, we won't be able to stop some of the consequences of our (my words now) greed and ignorance. Will the end of the world be in 50 years? 100? If so, I expect it'll be with a whimper, not a bang.
