This is for a class paper on the effects of piracy on the music industry...

Not morally. But illegaly yes

Stealing is taking something from someone so they no longer have it.

Downloading is duplicating it, therefor you're not stealing you are sharing. Sharing is not morally wrong.

Nah, nothing wrong with it

It's just as unethical as going into a store and lifting the cds off the shelf, but it's gonna happen anyways, because its easier to do on the internet, and more likely than not, you're not gonna get caught.

yes definately. i think bands writing music is their profession, they deserve to be paid for it. just like an artist deserves to be paid for their paiting, or a doctor deserves to be paid for saving lifes. you wouldnt expect a band to work for free surely? if you really like a band, and want to support them, you should buy their cd. i mean ifyou dont, then the underground bands simply wont get famous enough to make any money and so will have to leave the band as a side project while they get better paid jobs. after all, they all need money to buy food and a house

I'm not going to pay a dollar for every song I want.

I have like 2,000 songs. I don't have money like that.

So I don't feel bad for using Blubster.

:]

Maybe. But I still do it

-- Posted by matto at 2:04 pm on June 24, 2008

There's nothing wrong with downloading ANYTHING for free, illegally or not.  There's no reason to pay for media.  I pay to use the internet...so I'm going to use it.

I agree, though I know it's easier to look the other way to save a few bucks. For everyone out there who has a job, I presume you expect to get paid for your work, right? You can justify theft by saying you only do it because CD's or legal downloads cost too much but it's a chicken and egg thing. To survive, music publishers and recording companies (or any business of course) need X amount of money coming in to put food on their families tables, pay the artists, and if any is left, reward the stockholders for risking their money. But what's happening is that the smaller companies are folding like wooden chairs at a wedding in a heavy rain. The only ones left will be a few large companies. And you know what happens to prices when there is not much competition.

So it's only 60% morally wrong? I just don't get why having some legal and some illegal (assuming illegal) downloads makes it moral or not. The downloading of other people's "intellectual property" is either moral or not. Not the size of the library.
