e: fuck can't read on the industry, you could say its had a negative effect. but then again you could also argue that they make shit tons of money anyway and are screwing over their artists so hard they're still benefiting regardless

Positive, the big guys are still making money, and it gives a chance for the little guys to get around.

both. where's that option? it's taken away from artists in terms of making money but it's enabled more artists to come onto the music scene where they wouldn't be as able to before. that's why indie is basically pop now.

negative effect! its people stealing songs and bands aren't getting paid for doing their job!
-- Posted by Innuendo Girl at 2:06 pm on June 24, 2008
Probably both, but I'd say positive, especially for the lesser known bands who just want to get their stuff out there.

If bands aren't in it for the money, so that doesn't matter. If they are, then I wouldn't listen to them. The money's nice, but that's not why they do what they do.

musicians only make about 8%-25% of total profits, they're not getting paid shit to begin with. this doesn't justify filesharing, but the issue itself calls attention to this fact from here you could argue that filesharing is positive because it places emphasis on the issue of musicians getting paid
-- Posted by xlovexmex at 2:07 pm on June 24, 2008
well it takes away from the money the artists are getting so that's negative for them. but people are still making money so that's a plus and i like it so major plus there =]
-- Posted by marshmellowman at 2:07 pm on June 24, 2008
Positive. Research and studies have shown that filesharing only increases one's exposure to new music and then people's chances of going to concerts and buying merchandise to support the band directly. The artists don't get much at all from CD sales.
