Meet Jodie. Jodie was born with Rasmussen's encephalitis, and at around age 3 started having dangerous seizures that emanated from her right cerebral hemisphere. Additionally, she had limited use in the left side of her body.
In order to correct these problems, Jodie underwent a surgical procedure known as a hemispherectomy, in which the entire offending cerebral hemisphere is removed (holy shit!!!). The remaining area is filled with cerebral fluid. In order to compensate for the missing side, the remaining hemisphere reorganizes itself and takes over what the other side would have controlled. What results is a person who has half a brain but through time and therapy can still lead a normal life. Drawbacks can occur, such as limited vision and mild retardation, but in the long run the procedure is usually far more beneficial than living with the original problem.
tl;dr: brains are fucking awesome
