How do I make a picture in my image basket an avatar? It's the one of Sandy Koufax. Is it too big or not? Or do i have to donate to get custom avatars?

You need to donate to get a bigger avatar.
You could always try uploading the image into the public avatar gallery.

You can either donate $$$ to the site, or you can resize it to be a 32x32 pixel picture that is 5 Kb or less in size and submit it as a public avatar.
