Republished with permission from the Whitman College Peer Listener Handbook Note: The handbook is an excellent resource, especially when listening in person, however it does not perfectly mesh with LiveWire's "Peer Answers" philosophy.

As you speak with a person, not only are you sending them verbal messages through what you say, but you are also sending them non-verbal messages through your posture, facial expression, and tone of voice. It is important that your verbal and nonverbal messages are complementary and supportive of each other. There is a simple acronym for these non-verbal messages, ROLES.
R Remain RELAXED with your peer
0 Adopt an OPEN position
L LEAN toward your peer at times
E Maintain good EYE contact
S Face your peer SQUARELY
